ParticipantWell there are a lot of different opinions on this:
I myself feel that Software mixing still isnt up to snuff compared to hardware mixing like using a DJM800.However as a mobile DJ you do not need anything else other than your controller.
Some will bring a mixer anyways just in case their laptop dies as a backup.

ParticipantNot a mobile dj, but I would say no you don’t need a separate mixer. I personally don’t see how software mixing “isn’t up to snuff” and I used two turntables and a two channel mixer for 15 years.

ParticipantPlay on a 40,000 watt PK sound system and you can totally hear a difference.
I love my S4…but nothing to this day compares to Hardware mixing. The new Z eq on Traktor is almost as good as Hardware mixing but it is still not the same.

ParticipantPlayed at a big sport hall this weekend using my DDJ SX with Traktor while the other DJ used 2 CDJ 2000 and DJM800.
Bouth of us used mp3 and there was no differance in qualetie.
But for mobile gigs a controller will do just fine but always good to have some kind of backup. Club DJ can also get problems using cdj’s and djm’s any electronics can malefunction.December 12, 2012 at 6:59 pm #33539Anonymous
InactiveAnother benefit with a real mixer is that you could plug in an iPod or something else in case the laptop crashes or dies big time.

Thank you all for the responses. The Denon MC6000 which is what I have now can be used as a stand alone mixer so as a back up I could use an iPod. Just as clarification…I’m referring to the mixing consoles that are used in conjunction with the contoller. Examples are the A&H Zed 10FX or the 14.

Participantsome might have them for the FX and/or better controlls over mic (some might need 2 mic’s) needing to be able to play cd, but it’s not needed if what you need to be done can be done with just laptop and controller.

InactiveNow, there’s something magical about good analog mixers, the colorization… Especially with EQ and filters…

Bouth of us used mp3 and there was no differance in qualetie. There shouldnt be a difference in qualitiy between CDJs and the DDJ-SX as the DDJ-SX has the exact same soundcard in it that the CDJs have 😀
This is why i am so looking forward to getting my DDJ-SX

ParticipantI personally like having an analog mixer to adjust my PA system to the sound of the room(EQs and levels), I also like the mic pre-amps over my controllers, it is extra weight to some people but when your running 3 or more PA’s its nice to have complete control over everything right at your finger tips. Now this could be my opinion but certain mixers just give your signal some warmth that I haven’t seen come out digital ones. We use a Roland M-300 at my job and at the end of the day digital mixers can only try their best to replicate analog ones.

the output is so loud on the DDJ SX that I had to set the headroom in Traktor to -13db and master at 12 oclock 😀 and not go far beond 12 oclock on gain or master on the DDJ SX 😀 so ther is def power coming out
