MemberMaybe just narrowminded individuals… The amout of times ive seen people being like this dj is fucking mental then looking over and being like oh its a girl… Im like why does that make a difference? Good song choice is a skill that male/female can both perfect to be better then anyone…

ParticipantBearing in mind that this is England
This amazed me more than you as when I used to be at the booth back on “EARLY 80’s” here in my country “EGYPT” we had female DJs, well very few but they were their !!! Also those guys still accept female Singer !!! and I guess they also play tunes for female DJs !!!
Nothing wrong with you, it’s something wrong with them..I thinkJuly 9, 2011 at 1:39 am #3354Emma Partnow

MemberMore competition in the DJ market (or anything for that matter) will lead to stereotypes: “She’s a girl so she’s probably not as good as us; They’re using a controller and not a CDJ/Turntable so they’re not real DJ’s; Dubstep is destroying EDM.”
It’s always going to be around, unfortunately :(.

MemberON topic I think that it’s just the perils of being a female in a male dominated industry, people (men and even women sometimes) are going to go back to those primitive descriptions (female, young, digital, classic, handicap – whatever!) when someone new and different is going to pop in and possibly be amazing at something that they have been working on for a long time. When Orianthi came out everyone always made that distinction that she was female rather than just that she was an amazing guitar player.
I don’t know why but for me I am always excited by girl djs…. whenever I find one I’m excited to hear what they spin and how they spin. I guess just being surrounded by male djs all the time I like to listen to the subtleties and differences that a female perspective can offer. So for me when I say it – “ah a female dj!” It’s more excitement than anything.

MemberWe have only one working female DJ around here and that makes me a sad panda 🙁
As for the general stand on the point of girls DJing, most people (here) are prejudiced, for reasons unknown to me.. and that is plain stupid.

Memberfrankly I don’t think it’s that common… I’ve only ever seen 2 girl dj’s in my time. 1 local and one by the name of dj baby ann. (Didn’t much care for her) They just don’t seem all that common for whatever reason… Which I think is kinda weird. But yeah, I would say it’s more exciting than anything else. Perhaps I’m ignorant, but I can’t think of a “Household name” who’s a girl as far as EDM goes… So it’s probably just more surprising to people.

MemberThere are a few big name female DJs in the UK such as Annie Mac, Lisa Lashes, Lottie, Lisa Loud, DJ Heaven. I would love it if there were more, most of us blokes are too boring!
Ignore their small mindedness Emma. If you’re on the radio maybe have a few digs back at them?

I know Lisa Lashes and Lisa Loud; and they have been DJ’ing Successfully for 20 Years at least; so it Shouldn’t really be a Rarity in this Country; although I suppose if the Female DJ Community is Less Than 1% (Say); then that is Quite A Small Number; but still Not Unknown like an Undiscovered Species or something :);
One thing that did Help last night; and actually made me Laugh almost Uncontrollably; was when the Host tried to Mix Trance into my Set and TrainWrecked Twice !! He actually had to ‘Pull Out’ in the end and wait for my Set to Finish before he Began his Own; so I Suppose that is like having a ‘Dig’ in a way 🙂July 9, 2011 at 8:11 pm #3408Michael Fuchs
MemberI think there is actually a “threatening” element involved in this prejudice. Just over time, I’ve come to learn that women are USUALLY (not always) better at reading people and figuring out what they are thinking, kind of the way a mother can comfort you when sometimes a father can’t. So it might even be that it’s a little threatening that you have these “foreign” people coming into the industry who might be better than you (men) at reading the crows and sending out the right vibe. It blows my mind to know what a big role women play in the world and society as a whole and how much they contribute, yet, are still looked down upon as inferior. It’s just the “old-fashion” in some people who don’t expect to see women in the workforce, so they take it as a threat to their position since it is unfamiliar. I have to go get dressed up for the wedding as I’m a groomsman, but I’ll definitely come back to this thread to continue my post.

MemberI find women deejays to be quite refreshing and frankly, attractive ;). As long as you’re awesome at what you do, people won’t be able to hold you down with their nonsense. Music is universal.

I never knew that Lazard’s a woman! I love her music!

ParticipantIt’s because there is still many more male DJs than female DJs out there…thus it’s a rare thing.
I give you credit Emma for not milking it the way others do. I swear I see some female DJs doing more photoshoots than I see them spin.

And (although I don’t know who they are) by doing that kind of thing; all they are doing is Exploiting Themselves (and in a sense Degrading Themselves and other Female DJ’s); because if it comes down to what you ‘Look Like’; what happens to the Girls who are ‘Not Photogenic’; and there Must be Some; as they may have an Enormous Talent but have an Even Greater Battle to become ‘Recognised’ as an Artist if they don’t ‘Look The Part’; which I think is All Wrong;
I am Definitely Not ‘Women’s Lib’ (whatever that is); and people can do what they like with their Bodies; but the Girls who wear Skimpy Clothes now to get into the Limelight won’t really have much to fall back on when Age begins to creep up on them; as Nature is Not Kind to the Female Face/Body; and so will they still be DJ’ing in 20 Years ?July 11, 2011 at 3:54 am #3531jezalenko
