For Chilling why not go a real classic route and play some “Cafe del Mar” like stuff and mix in some things that nobody would expect (like a Lindsey Sterling dubstep).
For the thumpy on a prom night, stick to top 40s… followed by some dance classics for the dance section.

^ Funny thing is I’ve used Crystallize in a set to do exactly what Terry suggested, it works great

Also, I throw a lot of top40 remix music into my set to start when not certain that my electric music may not be a big hit. Test the waters with songs like Aoki + Kid Cudi “Pursuit of Happiness” and some Guetta + Black Eyed Peas. There have been house parties that had a top 40/hip-hop feel that I’ve managed to slowly turn EDM, and usually have good feedback from people unexposed to the genre.

    The gig was a success!!

This in spite of the set being shortened at the last minute, and the event going WAY over time (resulting in the shortened slot I had), but bloody fucking hell it was awesome!

And all those things that DJs hate happening during gigs, well, some of them came true for me. There was that one guy who insists on standing next to me the entire time while I’m DJ-ing, just staring at me work. There were the hot girls who came up to the booth all the time making requests (I should put up a sign saying that “The likelihood of your request being entertained is dependent on how much cleavage you show and how hot you actually are.”). There was the ‘drunk’ guy who kept on coming up to the table to tell me what an awesome job I was doing (whilst bombarding me with requests).

Actually, that last one made me really happy, in a ‘i-like-the-approval’ kind of way.

I’m still so buzzed and it ended over an hour ago. Haha. Thanks fellow forumers for the tips, in this thread and in others.

Congrats man… sounds like you couldn’t have asked for much more out of a first gig
