Hi there. If you’re playing to a mixed crowd/open genre club/bar/party, then there’s no reason why you can’t move through the spectrum of house music. It might depend a little on how long you’re playing for though. I would say it would contrast too much over a 1 hour set but over 3 or 4 hours, no probs – assuming the crowd aren’t there for a particular genre of course. Hope that helps.

I personally think mixing it up is a good idea, but it does depend on the venue and the gig that you are doing. Just remember to keep reading the crowd and don’t get sucked in to playing a 100% pre planned set list.

As long as the crowd loves it … that’s the main thing πŸ™‚

Mix it up, its more rewarding for you and the crowd, you have a rough plan anyway, be flexible and like the others sais, read the crowd and dont plan to much,,,,,

I always like to mix things up in my sets…and its actually amazing how much energy can be created by going from like a Really all over the place Complextro track into a big room Progressive track.

A few tips though when doing stuff like this:

Each Genre of House music is mixed differently and you should use that to your advantage.

Tech-House/House/Deep House – Layer your tracks..if u are using a 4 channel controller try layering 3 tracks together…it sounds amazing if eqed rigght

Progressive/Dutch/Big Room House – Intro to First build mixing – A lot of these songs have really looonnngg build ups…and tend to have a very 4 beat feel during the drop/Body of the song(4 beats repeated on a 32 beat pattern). The issue with these tracks is a lot of punters dont know what to do doing a 64 or more beat build…thats where u can add in the intro drums of your next track sampling and looping etc.

Electro/Complextro – Really hard to blend 2 tracks for a long duration and is better suited to 32 beat blend and cuts…A lot of people have problems mixing electro songs together other than doing the basic intro outro mixing…a good way to get out of this is to find segments of the song that do go back to a close to basic drum 32 beat pattern, toss that into a loop and begin mixing your next track, or doing quick cuts and doing a double drop.

Those are the majority of the house types of music that i can think of.

Oh and another little helpful tip…dont switch genres too quickly…let the punters get a feel for what you are playing first then take them on a journey to another genre…IMO 3 Songs is the min and 5-6 is around what i usually play before switching genres.

You can also find tracks that are great “Bridging” tracks which have elements of 2 genres that are great to quickly switch genres if the one you are currently playing isnt working on the dance floor.

You have to be flexible, might be that the crowd might not dig deep house for example and you need to stretch all the way to nu-disco.

I love mixing over genre boundaries. It surprises people and you can get great reactions from it.
Made a mix in a bar last weekend, mostly “chill-house” but then mixed in some belearic, italo-house and even some downbeat dubstep. It was great and I even got asked a couple of times about songs etc.

Mix it up for sure. Take people on a journey. Unless you are playing at a specific genre night then you shouldnt just play all the same stuff.
