Vinyl is nice but the trend is that fewer and fewer DJs spin vinyl out there, instead using digital tools of all kinds. Anyway, people say to learn to beatmatch using CDJs. I say that’s also cheating as you could set up the BPM value to two decimals and use cue points to start. So if you *really* want to say you know how to beatmatch, it’s done with vinyl, not CDJs.

Guess it’s good to get the basic learnt first with out the temptation of using the software to help to much, Do you think the like’s of latest and greatest crontroller’s will become out dated fast?

Well, yes the pace of controller technology is accelerating with all the iPad solutions that me thinks might become the next big wave. In addition, it makes the entry level to DJ:ing very low so we get the same situation as with music production: many could do it and mediocrity rules.

Well apart from the DDJ SX not much new was seen and nothing revolutionary in the past 6 months. So my guess is, that it is slowing down. I also think that while I like the idea of iPad DJing, it is not quite there yet…

I do not feel that it is necessary to know about turntables today. The upkeep of turntables is considerable and you need to factor that in. You will need control vinyls and work with software anyways or you will need to buy every song on vinyl…
Then you will need needles and if you start out you will destroy some of them. The turntable itself will need upkeep and care unless you dig in and buy some Technics that can withstand beatings better. You will need decent sets of slipmats,… the list goes on. I sure know why I sold my turntables and only kept the oldest Technics as a display model for my home 😉

Thanks for your answer, the turntables do sound like the more expensive option.
