Well fits of all I organise all my music in iTunes and do not ever touch it in VDJ.
What I usually do is I organise via the smart playlist features. I have several smart playlists which are genre playlists (e.g. “house”, “deep”, “belearic”,…) and I have rating playlists (I rated all my songs depending on their energy. So 5 stars will not be a song I like the best, but with the most “energy” I feel in the song). I have several other smarties, based on most played, era of music, ….

I also have a few manual playlists that are my “hit rotation” or personal Top 40s again genre specific and overall top 40s.

When I prepare a set I usually do the following: I make a manual playlist for the set and start adding music. Usually it only takes me about 15min until there is so much music in there that I need to stop. I then look at how long my set should be (for example 2 hours) and keep dragging songs out again until I have double that time (in that example 4 hours of music). The songs I pulled out and some other songs I put in a “set backup” list.

    And there I am done…
(All my files are auto-tagged by MixedInKey, so I rarely do manual tagging.)

Now for VDJ, at least in VDJ Pro you can easily add collumns and re-arrange them by right-clicking on the header of the playlist view. I usually have them with Track Number – Artist – Title – Time – Key – Comments – BPM listed.

Hi Terry, cant thank you enough for that detailed and really helpful response, I atcually never thought about right clicking on the thin bar above the column and hey presto gives a huge amount of other options, bitrate comments, Im just going to have artist, titel, bpm, bitrate and comments, comments. With regards to smart playlists, obviously this would mean going into each track info and ammending them if need be, for example itunes has labelled some tracks as dance where to you or I this would be house. Another thing I just had a go at creating a smart playlist just to test it out and set the rule for all tracks with bitrate of 320 but when I pressed ok nothing showed in the folder? So I assume this would be for tracks added there on afterwards? How do I get it to deal with the current tracks I have into a smart playlist? Once again terry many thanks for your advice

Smart playlists work on all tracks, old and new. There probably are no songs with that bitrate if they do not show, or you have created a “exactly” instead or “larger then” rule.
