Participant+1 on the headphones.
DiBartdi, you will come to realize, that DJs and promoters are probably the most picky and opinionated people you will ever meet…and thats a good thing for the most part. Wearing fashion statements and bling no matter of what type will put a lot of people off. Now i know that you are not DJing for other DJs or the promoters, but chances are that those peer groups are the ones to give you more gigs. By being accepted by your peers you can then focus on utilitizing the connections you make to further your goals.
By using something like the Beats Pro, you are making a statement…and that statement is hey look at me i have all this cash and i spent it on an accessory, and not a Utility item.
I made this statement before and i stick by it…if you are working on a construction site and you had to haul a load of shit away…would you drive a pick up truck or a ferrari? Yeah you make look cool as shit in ur ferrari but NONE of your peers would take you seriously.
This is the EXACT same when it comes to DJing…actually probably more when it comes to DJing because it is a bit of a popularity contest with your fellow DJs as well as ur fans.
Ur fans are not going to care wtf you are wearing…either beats or pioneers etc. BUT a lot of promoters and other DJs will be like LMAO look at that fool hes using beats…guy must be a newb. even people who have never seen you spin before will automatically associate BEATs to kids and amateaurs. Now if you mess up during a set…and wear the beats…promoters will associate you to being a rookie even more.
Where as if you were to wear Pioneer or Denons or Ultrasones, you have the right tool for the right job.
You wouldnt use a gardening shovel to shovel snow…so use the proper headphones for the proper job, if you ever want to get into production you will need a pair of STUDIO grade headphones…and no matter what BEATS say…any Beats line are not studio Quality.
On a side note, Monster has dropped the contract for the Dr. Dre Beats and will no longer be in production.

Memberwoha, never thought of it like that, got your point and i guess you are right. so you say getting the headphones first is the most viable decision to at least dont look like a noob? isnt the turntable/cdjs set a better way to prevent prejudices? what headphones would you reccomend me that are resistant, sound good and arent ugly as hell (:P)?

ParticipantPioneer, Ultrasone, Denons…
Personally I use the HDJ-2000s, and i love them…yeah they arnt that flashy looking but they have amazing construction, and super comfortable.
The thing with Turntables/CDJs and a mixer is that do you really want to haul all that crap with you to your gigs? What happens if the Venue/Promoter has Denon CDJs not Pioneer, or a Rane or zone mixer and not a Pioneer?
I too am going to be buying a CDJ/Mixer setup again since i sold my last one, but im saving until i can get 2X2000s and a 900 or a 2000 mixer.
The great thing about having a good controller is that no matter where you go or what setup they have you can still go out and play your set exactly the way you want in any scenario.
I dont want to practice on shitty cdj350s and a 400 when i can do 100X more on my controller.

Membercool, forgot about the lack of portability in analog set ups, ill get the headphones then, ive read bout the HDJ-2000s, are they really as amazing as they put them?

ParticipantHeadphones are totally a personal decision since not all heads are made the same.
After you have decided on a few brands of quality monitors then its just a matter of personal preference…what i may really like someone may not as their head is bigger or smaller than mine.
Best is just to go down and try some different pairs on and see what you like the most.
Personally if my HDJ2000s (2 years old and still not a thing wrong with them with steady gigging) ever break…i will definately be buying another pair…if pioneer hasnt upgraded its flagship headphones.

MemberMy issue is however, I cant try any of the DJ equipment I buy as I ship it from the US ’cause in here (Argentina) maybe the same HDJ2000 instead of costing 240, they are sold at over 2500 pesos (which is like 500 dollars). And I can only get them second hand in here, which isnt worth it. Thats why I ask for so many opinions in here. As far as Ive read these Pioneer headphones are amazing and they would fit my style. I also looked for the Denon as I generally like their products but the durability is appearly too low 🙁
Thanks for everything Hee Won Jung 🙂 see ya roundNovember 23, 2012 at 8:13 pm #32454Terry_42
KeymasterWell Hee gives good reasons there, my reasoning also included also:
– Why would I ever buy a PA when it is so easy to rent one, as I cannot ever get a PA that would cover parties from 50 to 5000 people…
– I would never again buy CDJs or turntables since I went digital, but that is also a statement and a decision 😉November 23, 2012 at 8:19 pm #32457DiBartdi
Memberthe problem is renting one requires an investment, that will increase your price (hiring you would be more expensive) or else, you make less profit. buying one will enable you be payed more but less than if you rented it, and allows for profit.
I gotta remind you buying the PA is at least in my case 100% for economic reasons, not related to creativity or actual DJing but more of a business objective so that DJing can start paying off better without leaving me broke like its happenin now

ParticipantInvesting in a quality PA system is a really good investment if you are dead set serious about djing as a source of income. From my experience and the way we built our 2 systems was by first getting gigs that can pay for the systems. Get a couple of mobile gigs where u can make 800-1000 bucks off them, and just rent a PA system. Then once u have made a market for yourself and u are able to get gigs on a some what regular basis drop the cash on a PA system.
A decent PA system u are gonna want to spend 2-5 grand depending on what u exactly want.
There’s no point in dropping that type of money if u only get a decent paying mobile gig once every 2 months

InactiveGet a pair of A&H XOnes, XD-53s or I even like the smaller XD40s as they are super-comfortable due to their size and very affordable.
PS: At some point you will have (assuming you are an audio head):
* Reference headphones for production
* DJ headphones for DJ:ing
* Good earbuds for personal listening
* Cheap headphones for average wear-and-tear
* And musician earplugsThat’s how it goes.

MemberJust to add more confusion to the headphone side of things: V-Moda Crossfade LP2, AiAiAi TMA-1 and Sennheiser HD-25 are also reaaally good ones to consider. For the price all of them blow the HDJ2000 out of the water (IMO), but only the LP2 is really comparable (circumaural, 50mm drivers).
