ParticipantFor that amount u cannot get anything that you will like especially for Dubstep and DnB as a lot of those style of songs go really low in frequencys.
Honestly u need at LEAST 2k to build a basic PA system.
Until then either spend the 500 on some 8″ Cheap Studio Monitors like the Rokit 8s.

MemberAppreciate what your saying, but for a few unpaid house parties and small gigs 2k is out the question
Is there nothing on the market or 2nd hand that fits the bill?
Are Mackie 450s or Thumps, JBL, Yamaha or EV any good?

ParticipantJimmy, go to Seismic Audio . com. very affordable PA that you dont need to break the bank for. I think they offer an active 15″ main powered 500w for..like $180-220. I have something similar to them and they boom my house partys just fine. I’d disagree with Hee when he says you need 2k. I feel like i know what your situaiton is, and 500 will be able to get you a rudimentary PA. again, check out seismic audio

ParticipantStandard monitor PAs will not suffice for musical Genres like Dubstep and Drum and Bass…as most “monitors” cannot get the sub bass that makes Dubstep…well Dubstep.
What size is considered a small gig? How big of a room? House Party again what size? 20 people 100 people?
Like i said for 500 you can get 2 rokit 8s that will have enough low end plus good clarity for a small house party.
There are numerous threads regarding a PA system that can be found here:

ParticipantExcept studio monitors are not meant for a live environment…Phil has posted several comments on various topics about why studio monitors should NOT be used for live use. PA (no matter quality) is sturdy, set in a tough cabinet, has some sort of overload protection, and is developed for a “wide” cone of sound. Studios have a “close” cone of sound, are vulnerable to overload, and have no literal phsyical protection from a drunk punter. I think Phil’s blog post was “studio monitors v small pa”. It’s a relatively new post, Jimmy, you may find your monitor v pa answers there

Participantand a 15 or 18 powered sub can always be added to produce low end. Jimmy, you may want to look at only one main and a sub? 🙂

ParticipantActually…in real use…the Rokit 8s are perfectly acceptable for a small house Party…as i have used mine for several times before, it will not fill a nitch like a full PA, but there are very large differences between a PA and monitors…for small gigs like small house parties they are totally useable. I have used mine several times for small gigs and after parties with no problem.
The Rokit 8s are a CHEAP and AFFORDABLE solution that u can use that will combine the high and lows that you will need.
Buying a cheap PA is useless and the money should be saved for a long lasting solution that is reliable and produces good sound.
I would rather use my Studio Monitors than buy a cheap set of Behringers that will break down with passible sound quality.
Please read more in depth to my post regarding PA systems as I have quite a bit of experience in using multiple PA systems as well as Active Studio monitors.

NEVER use just 1 monitor and 1 sub, just dont do it, you cannot achieve a “round” sound by using only 1 and 1.

Participantwithin 5 mins of google this is what i have found regarding Seismic Audio.
http://www.djforums.com/forums/showthread.php?6466-Seismic-Audio-PWS-10-Speaker-Review
I do not believe in Youtube, amazon or epionion review pages as they usually do not come from people that actually understand the industry and what qualifies as a “good” speaker.

MemberThanks for all the info guys, keep it coming
So would you advise against a pair of 2nd hand Mackie 450 for instance as a starting point?
Seen them go for under and around the £500 markWhats your thoughts guys?

ParticipantMy opinion is that those would do you just fine for your less-than 100 people house parties.
