Think you answered you own question “I lowered the VDJ output to 50% and balanced the rest to maintain the same overall volume and I got a nice crisp sound”

Using your ears and balancing the equipment should work best but when mixing you want everything balanced and use the mixer only to do slight volume changes.

Yes, I realised that might be the case. But I’m a techy, need an explaination, type of guy and wondered if there was a sound engineer out there who could explain what’s happenning and why. That would help me get the sound to the best quality possible.

Im in no way a sound engineer or an expert, but I think sound quality in volume depends on how the signal is amplified.
I mean: Virtual DJ, or any DJ software amplifies the sound digitally. Its as if you turn up the gain of a track. It sounds distorted, then you balance it with your master out to make it sound neat.
The longer the signal path is, the more devices you have to sync. But in my opinion, you should control your volume in a more analog way, in an amplifier, the mixer or the audio card, and leave the master out of your digital dj software at a level where it can be heard but it doesnt amplify the sound in a big amount.

I may stand correct or 100% wrong.

I think I’m beginning to get my head around this – let’s see if my understanding is correct.

The VDJ controls are amplfying the signal from min to max (known as gain control?) whereas the mixer is in fact simply controlling the volume from min (shut off and no sound ) to max (full signal as it comes from the sound card).

OK. Now if that’s correct what is the difference between the individual deck volume controls and the master output control on my DJ2Go controller? Are the indivual deck controls gain rather than volume and the master output a volume control? The manual describes all 3 as volume.

Why does this all have to be so complex? Or is it me just making it so.

    P.S.

    Trying to think logically (difficult!)…

The first control in the chain is always going to be gain and anything further on will be volume?

    this might help: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2011/09/a-practical-guide-to-volume-settings-for-djs/

short summary, you should control the main volume with the amplifier and try to get all your signals along the way to approximately 0db by setting the gain correctly.

That was really helpful, thanks for finding that. I’ll work my way through and see how it improves things.
