ParticipantI’m in the process of converting from VirtualDJ to Traktor Pro. I would love to see the replies to this one. I was pretty good at this with VirtualDJ. However, the Waveforms and Stripes are somewhat different in Traktor Pro 2.

How did you do it in Virtual DJ? Just asking!

I’m pretty good with the counting in my head now. I was able to visualize the phrases a lot better in VirtualDJ. I can pretty much look at the waveforms and tell where the chorus is probably located or a verse is located and the intro/outros. I also used a skin in Virtual DJ that counted 4 beats using 4 lights. It would count at the tempo of the song. So, I usually tried to keep the counting in my head synced with the 4 beat counter on the screen. One thing I’ve noticed is that different tunes have different patterns. Dont think that all verses or choruses will be the same number of bars.
I’m still a newbie with all of this. So, if I sound confusing, that may be why. I’m sure some of the vets will jump in soon.

ParticipantThere are a few options here:
With in your deck settings there is an option to show beats, and beats to cue point.
With that said…just count the beats yourself…If you dont know a song well enough to know where the breaks, breakdowns, switches etc are in it…then you shouldnt be DJing with it.
As well another option you have is on each deck there is a small + and – on it…you can use it to zoom in and out of the active portion of your waveforms.
I have over 2000 tracks that i actively gig with…and no i dont memorize all of them…but i just “know” when the breakdown is going to hit…Start Djing without looking at your waveforms…it will get you in the habit of just knowing your music.
I think this is one of the biggest issues with pure Digital DJs…they rely too much on the technology rather than using the tools already provided…(im talking about your ears :d)

MemberI dont know if counting is really a good idea. It makes everything too mathematical and calculated, and DJing is art, not mathematics (though they are closely related lol but doesnt help my point)
I rarelly stop to count bars, I think its by far better just listening to the tracks, instinctvly stomping your feet to the ryhtm and just knowing when the bar or phrase is goin to start and end. Another thing you can do is count in your head 1, 2, 3, 4 1,2,3,4November 1, 2012 at 8:29 am #31174backtothefront

The Biggest lesson I teach any new DJs is remember 4 on the floor…4×4 is all EDM…just at different tempos.
