    With me being in the R/C Helicopter industry, and having done mostly the same thing that Phil Morse and the Digital DJ Tips team are doing, I’ve heard this many a time.

    Manufacturers tend to give products free for review. Thus they expect good thing’s about it, and yes a lot of reviews out there can be bias. Phil and the team do a great job and are fair. Some manufactures do throw toy’s out the pram when the reviewer scores the product badly and threaten never to give a product for review again.

    The best advice is usually self-research, Read a few reviews and user reviews and see what’s what.

    Given the fact that a reviewer has to be “politically correct”, more often than not a sensible reader can decode what the reviewer actually says and understand when a product is below his own standards! 😉

    To answer your questions, one device I am really really impressed over the years and would immediately buy again if it broke or went bad is my BCR 2000. Its not a DJ-specific controller but it has so much felxibility under the hood and a great amount of “physical controls” which I think I could never live without it! 😉 I dont think there’s anything quite like it even in higher price ranges! And yes, it is Behringer so my initial expectations werent that high!

    Sometimes the reviewer got a free version and they don’t want to anger the pr rep for the company. With a lot of amateur comments (Musiciansfriend et rest), either they don’t know of something better as they have never been able to afford quality. Or then they have to justify their purchase for themselves.

    Well I have reviewed guitar gear for quite some time for a guitar magazine. I did not feel so obliged and was sometimes pretty hard with crappy gear… prolly why I lost that gig :O

    But I just looked up a few reviews of Phil and he is pretty fair. Now seldom is a product complete rubbish nowadays (aka toy companies do not send gear to review), but he can be quite hard if need be (just watch some of Phil’s headphone reviews). He also lists all the cons very nicely for each product. So while I have not reviewed anything myself yet for this site, I think Phil does an excellent job and also factors in what others might like or not. (Aka “I dislike unit XY not having channel VUs, but that might be alright for you if…”)

    The post wasn’t suggesting that Phil isn’t fair with his reviews it more about reviews in general and how they never seem to tell the whole story. Take Pioneer for example “The industry standard” they always seem to get great reviews but are over priced, have poor quality control and their Rekord software which their CDJ’s are so reliant on is so full of bugs it should be on the discovery chanel. I was wondering what peoples thoughts on reviews were and the experience they’ve had buying gear.

    I always Google “<> problems” and see what I get. You can usually find forum posts or blog posts from Joe Public saying what problems they have had.

    And sometimes there’s a piece of kit which is full of problems – like my Stanton SCS.1 – but still brilliant.
