MemberGood question. For me, if I have some nerves/bad day and I’m at home, I’ll load up Gramatik’s Stairway To Heaven hip-hop remix and just go mental having a scratch 😀
Live can be difficult to get “in the mood” instantly, it usually takes me a few songs to get relaxed and in the groove of things. But once people start dancing, it’s usually good fun from there onwards 😎

How Do ‘You’ Prepare Yourself Psychologically for Your DJ’ing ?
Does Your Gear have to be ‘Set Up’ in a Particular Manner;
Do You have ‘Equipment’ that has become your Tools and you ‘Must’ use;
Do You Take Some ‘Time’ to Relax Psychologically Before you ‘Perform’ and How Much;
Do You have a Ritual that you Follow Before you ‘Leave Home’; or Begin Mixing ‘At Home’;
How Much Time (if any) do You take to Practice Your ‘Art’;
Do You ever Read or Follow Tutorials to ‘Better Your Best Practice’Any Further Preparations I have Not Mentioned are Very Welcome 😎
Good thread indeed Emma!
– My gear doesn’t have to be setup in a certain manner (surprisingly as i have OCD). But i do prefer Techs on the outside CDJs on the inside..
– Tools i must use is my Sennheiser HD25’s, i physically can’t use any other headphones now. Also i can’t use anything apart from CDJ1000 mk3’s no more when gigging.
– I do tend to relax and chill out a little, often by chilling having a pizza for an hour or sitting downloading new tracks.
– Ritual, yes indeed, i have a mix while im getting ready and burning my last few tracks then i follow certain steps packing my bags.
– Hard one to pinpoint. I practice a lot. Some weeks can be more than others.
– Erm not so much now, as i have a lot of well hooked up talented mates that i regularly play with so just watch them and practice new things.Do you do any of this Emma?
– Also, do any of you guys have something that you must have with you while DJ’n but non related to your performance?

MemberThank You for your Great Answers :); and the Insight to How Others Prepare Psychologically :cool:;
Indeed I do Follow Some of these Guidelines Liambo my Friend :D;
I Suffer from a Personality Disorder (Non-Treatable); and so my ‘Preparation’ is Very Meticulous :);
When I do my Radio Shows; Produce; Compose; or Master; my Laptop Must be Positioned Absolutely and Directly in front of my Face; so that 80% of my ‘Eye-Span’ is filled with my Laptop’s Screen; I Turn Off All Email and Internet; so that I Cannot be Disturbed; my Coffee is to my Right; my Cigarettes to my Left (with my Medication); and my Ash-Tray under my Chin; Currently I am Not Happy with my Headphones; but don’t have the Cash to Replace Them;
I Always Use Ableton now; though I have Access to Traktor Pro 2; and Many Other VST/Stand Alone Synths; so that when I sit in front of my Laptop I can DJ; Compose; Produce; or do anything really; as my Laptop is my ….
Beat Laboratory :D;
I Never Eat during the day Before I sit down to Work; and I Only Eat once I have Finished; I Make Sure that at some point during the day I have taken some time out to Relax; and Allow my Right Brain to Become Active;
I Practice Every Day; and this happens between 7pm (ish) and 2am (ish); if I Achieve Something it is Great; but if I haven’t Achieved Anything Tangible; it is Okay; as I Feel that ‘The Ritual’ is Necessary to Maintain Standards :);
Obviously I haven’t talked about ‘Live Gigs’; but that is just because my Current Health Condition doesn’t Allow it;
However; when I was last out on ‘Stage’; I was Exactly like you Liambo; I ‘Need’ Everything to Look Right; and for Everything to be at my ‘Hands/Fingers’ Disposal;
Clearly I Don’t Have A Life right now; but I Respect that Others Do 🙂July 5, 2011 at 1:06 am #2876DJ GRE

So… for live gigs, I usually have a beer, just one, to calm me down a bit. I don’t need my set up to be perfect and this is probably because I usually have to work around other DJs stuff or have no real DJ booth to speak of like a small bar table or a stool! I always bring my launchpad as my minimalist set up in case there’s no room for all my other gear.At home I will play a drum track and drink a cup of coffee and feel the groove. Even if I don’t feel like it I will mix for at least half an hour a day – for me regularity is better than long bursts of creativity followed by a long draught, but that’s just my personality.

MemberAfter I hit the gym and have that adrenaline rushing through my body, it feels better than any energy drink/alcohol/drugs could ever do to get me in the zone.

ParticipantI usually either approach the booth all psyched up to play stuff, or worried to death about what I’ll play and if this crowd is cool or if I’ll be facing a handful of trixies begging me to stop playing music and play crap instead.
I’ll have a drink or two before I go on, but simply just go into it to get it going, and go from there.

Personally I am Very Interested in Our Members ‘Preparation’ Before they Approach their Bookings; even if these Bookings are Only With Themselves;
I have been Told that ‘Positive Self Talk’ is Important; but is that ‘Enough’ ?July 8, 2011 at 2:31 am #1000930yournamehere

– Nah. I generally set up and break down in the same order, just so I keep up with everything.
– My personal rig has 2 CD players and a Numark DDS. I’m partial to it, but just as easily use Cue/Virtual DJ.
– Whenever I get in the car to drive, I start blanking out stupid real world shit that won’t matter for the next X hours. I don’t need to worry about whether or not we ordered some music for customers when I’m not at the store.
– Yeah, but it mostly involves checking equipment and cables. I’m terrible about forgetting shit that matters. Also PHONE/KEYS/INSULIN. When I’m driving to a show, I spend time flipping through the radio on a 2-3 minute/1-2 song rotation. When I’m at home practicing, I just plug in and go.
– I listen to music 90% of my day. Usually, I turn on the rig and fart around for an hour or two at least once every couple days.
– I listen to other people’s sets/mixes. And I listen to my own sorta obsessively, since that’s the easiest way to hear where I’m fucking up.July 8, 2011 at 2:50 am #3231Xeva

ParticipantListen my favourite music and get stoked. Watch videos of my favourite DJs perform. I like Paul Van Dyke’s performance at Sensation White 2005. Pretty cool

ParticipantWhen I first got my ddj deck, I just jumped straight in and mixed. posting up all manner of good bad ugly and magical. At the moment I am working on a project with my wife, which has forced me to actually think about the set, where I want it to go and how to blend some extremley different styles of music.. First thing we did is brainstorm a ‘pool’ of track candidates and even different versions of the same track, then spend hours going through them seeing what goes and what doesn’t deleting the crap and also set the playlist from first track to last even so far as listing time to blend each to the next before I lay it down. This has proved to me that the time and effort taken to get all this done is going to give huge benefits in the final product and is certainly what I will do from now on.

MemberI sometimes have Difficulty ‘Beginning’ a Set that is to be Broadcast on International Radio; and Often forget to think of the ‘Mood’ I may be in (whether I have been Affected by the day etc); and so on ‘Occasions’ I think to myself ‘Okay; no problem; I will start in the middle); and although I can say that has been Successful on some Occasions; it is not always so; however; on the same hand I find that Beginning a Set at ‘Track 1’ leaves me the following day not feeling ‘Satisfied’ with how the Set was ‘Developing’; and end up Scrapping It and Beginning again; but this then leaves me in a ‘Trap’ of just getting ‘Stuck’; (I Practice; Record; Practice; Record; and then Play Live for the when the Set needs to go out);

Before I say anything.. effin’ props man! I so love that track. Nas’, ‘It Ain’t Hard To Tell’ Acapella goes so well with it 😀 cheers!
On topic.. I kinda zone out pre-set and kinda distance myself from all music, no radio.. no ipod. During this time I mentally sort out my set as I drive to the venue, taking cues from the environment between home and the place to be. I go through mixes that I’d want to debut, be they guerrilla remixes or simple scratch edits. I like to go through my rolodex to see what would be the primo track for me to start with.
When I get to the venue, I try to be there at least an hour early to set up and mooch off of the vibe, hail known patrons and staff and, If nerves persist, get a quick beer to mellow me out – then I let it rip.I’m a very nervous performer though.. but this is my most prevalent ritual
