Not quite sure what you are referring to. All DJ software let’s you change the tempo of a track to match whatever you are mixing in or out to. What is it you want to edit? If you are talking about editing the beatgrid, with the exception of Traktor, most DJ software is pretty good at handling beatgrid on old manually drummed material and has the option to edit the grids manually should the software get it wrong.

Hi, with older music using live drums the tempo can be off, inconsistent throughout?

If you are using software like Serato DJ it has a so called “flexible beatgrid” so no matter that it differs and or changes throughout the track Serato will be on top of it.
Mixvibes Cross has a similar feature, however Traktor totally lacks this.
So mixing older tunes with live drums are easier to mix in Serato or Cross.

I would not use correction software for this as they tend to put in artifacts.

Thanks Terry. Does Rekordbox DJ have a similar function?

Rekordbox DJ does have this ability but you will need to use sync to benefit from lining up each beat grid.
With sync on Rekordbox shrinks/stretches the track to keep the beats in line, it is amazing to watch and is the main reason I purchased it. Warning, you need master tempo on to avoid hearing the song being manipulated.

On your original question you “could” use audio editing software to either insert or remove time to evenly space out each beat but the result may not sound great.

    Joe,
I think I understand what it is you’re trying to do as I have run across the same issue. I play a lot of “older” music in my sets and have been plagued by changing tempo during a longer blend. To my knowledge, your only real option is to manually beat grid the songs you are trying to use. There is a really good tutorial on YouTube by a DJ named Ron A. He suggests using a “master track” as a kind of metronome to beat grid to. I found it to be very helpful in trying to beat grid tracks. Most important to remember though is that although the software programs are good at beat grid-ding, they will often mistakenly place the the first beat marker at the beginning of a song instead of on the first down beat. With a little practice it’s not hard to manually beat grid, it just takes time…hope that helps.

I think that Rekordbox and Serato use virtually the same algorithm with the flex grid.
Honestly you only need to manual beatgrid if the detection totally screws you, which gets more rare these days in Serato at least.
Even if you manual beatgrid in Traktor you will never get it right for tempo change songs as the grid is fixed, it would be a pain in the behind to fix that via transition points. It would prolly take you 30min per track.

Even if the auto-grid fails in Serato, I go to the first beat of first line, hit “start” button and rest of the grid will align automatically.
