Hi Jacob, welcome to the forums. Hope you’ll find what you are looking for here. Enjoy your time with us.

As for your questions, I am not much of a producer (or none at all for that matter), so others will have to chime in here. I can say though that there is no such things as “best” software. It wholly depends on what it is exactly you want to do, how you want to do it and lots of personal preference.

As for instruments, I understand many producers use a keyboard of easy input of notes, so I’d think that would be a good place to start, but I may be wrong. Getting some basic musical knowledge under your belt seems like a good investment too.

    Hey and welcome!

Before you go into software for producing, I would highly recommend DJing a bit and getting to know songs, song structure and music theory. There are excellent books on the topic.

    Jacob,

I think (for what it’s worth), begin by trying to understand “why” you want to become a DJ and what type of DJ you want to be. Music is broad based..there are so many nucs and crannies! Is it the allure of playing the “Big Gig” in the “Big Room”, the adoration of the crowd, the money perhaps, the “cool factor”?
This is were I began and it has served me well. For me, it is bringing what it is that I love to listen to and believe in (most important), to my audience. Playing that track that most have never heard and vibin’ on their reaction to it. Playing a song from the days before “disco” was even a word and what there was was R&B and having someone ask me about the music I play, how do they get “my sound”. Of course it’s not my sound, it’s the sound of what I grew up on. It’s my interpretation of someone else’s sound.
I would say explore whether this is a passing fancy or a deep rooted passion (hopefully it’s the later!). If it is a passion, regardless of the motivation, then “Chive on bro”.

OBTW…for you old house heads out there, going to see Mark Farina in New Orleans on December 1oth. My buddy is doing his warm up set…I’m Amped!

    Hope that helps Jacob,
