ModeratorI am guessing that, unless you switch thru on the sound card, the sound (be it TC tone or actual audio) goes through the software. Recording options in the software would normally record whatever is presented on the master output. This would mean both the TC-controlled electronic music file as well as the actual vinyl audio if the software deck is set to thru.
Again, that is what makes sense, but haven’t tried that particular action with that exact setup.

ParticipantWell, you’d think that, but the older and lower end Serato units don’t do it, so I’m trying to see if the A6 does.

ModeratorAgain, the interface really doesn’t distinguish between the two kinds of signal. It just forwards them to the software. Where it becomes tricky is where you switch to thru for regular vinyl option. Some sound cards have a thru switch which internally sends the vinyl audio straight to the outputs (after gaining it to line level and running RIAA-correction if all works as it’s supposed to). Some sound cards have a software tool that let’s you switch to thru in the tool, otherwise the same effect. In both these cases regular vinyl audio gets sent directly to your mixer inputs, not to your software. If your software supports thru switching, ALL signals (so both TC and vinyl audio) get sent to your software. The thru/TC setting then determines if the software takes the TC signal to control the deck, or if it just sends the audio to/through the deck. In both cases audio comes out of the master and should be able to be recorded.

ParticipantIf you’re using an external mixer then you can connect the record out (or master 2) from the mixer to the “main in” on the Audio 6. Set the mix recorder setting to External, check your input settings are correct (it’s the bottom one in the list on the inputs page in settings I think – send/return, something like that) and that should do the trick. You only need to worry about the direct thru stuff if you’re using the internal mixer with a controller.

ParticipantDammit. I’m completely confused. Let me explain my setup and what I’m trying to accomplish and perhaps someone can steer me a bit. I don’t want to upgrade unless I have to, but if I have to then I guess I have to.
I have a Rane SL-1 that is connected up with 2 turntables and a Numark M2 mixer. Very simple, bare bones setup. The master out of the M2 goes to input of a Novation Twitch that is set to Thru just because a) I use it as my main soundcard and b) I have a couple controllers and I like to bounce between DJ methods from time to time for the sake of staying inspired. Now, the SL-1 is being bus powered by my computer (MBP) as i don’t have a standalone power supply for it (it’s arriving today). I have both SSL and SDJ. What I want to be able to do is record sets, no matter the method I’m using. So, recording all vinyl sets, recording DVS sets, and (if possible) recording sets where I’m going back and forth sometimes between vinyl and DVS.
The difficulties:
SSl doesn’t record at all.
SDJ doesn’t work with the SL-1.
With this setup, trying to record the input of the Twitch in, say, Logic, results in an audio recording that stutters so much as to be unlistenable.
What are some solutions?

ParticipantProblem solved.
The issue was the Twitch. I’m using the newest drivers for it but those are dated 2014 and I suspect are not nearly going to cut it. So, I swapped my Twitch out for my Vestax VCI-300 mkII and had Ableton Live record the audio input from my mixer while running SSL elsewhere, no problem. So yeah, it’s a little fiddly I guess but it does solve the issue.
