KeymasterIf your heart is set on Rekordbox so be it.
I would not get the RX, it is a waste of money for that price. You will be much better of using the RZ/SZ with a laptop.
Your questions:
1. Yes you have to. Beatgrids etc. do not translate from VDJ
2. It is crap.Hope that helps.

ParticipantHi,
I went for the RZ as my first controller, and I love it! If you’re starting fresh, I’d recommend staying away for all the weird knobs – and focus on the basic stuff 🙂

ParticipantHi Terry… my heart is not set on Rekordbox at all. I’m only considering it as, with the XDJ-RX, I could do away with my laptop. Are you able to say what specifically you didn’t/don’t like about the RX?
Thanks for the feedback Tord. How are you finding Rekordbox for dj’ing with (as opposed to just preparing tracks)?

It works quite well. Just make sure not to stare at your screen all the time, but that goes for any kind of equipment, and not just this unit.

KeymasterThe RX is very limited in what it can do without a laptop and even with a laptop you have much less abilities than with any other controller.
I use the Denon MCX8000 which is much more capable standalone (however uses Serato/Engine) and still I use it mostly with Serato. However the MCX8000 has all the bells and whistles to work as good with Serato as any other controller (and in some respects better) whereas the RX is a compromise and in my book not a good one.September 14, 2016 at 10:19 am #2445851Kris Witha K
ParticipantThanks again Terry. I feel inclined to go with the DDJ-SZ then. I can continue using VDJ or switch to Serato. I’m guessing I could even use it with Rekordbox if I wanted to? Not sure about that though?

Definitely never going to happen.

ParticipantHey Kris, you can use the SZ or SX2 with RB Dj/Performance mode no problems. Tried it out with both personally and though my computer could barely handle it, both controllers worked fine barring LED issues. Couldn’t test DVS and the like as well. I blame that on the controllers and RB DJ being too demanding for my machine at the same time though.
I went with the SX2 as I didn’t need the fancy jog wheels and I figured if I need DVS or anything like that, it’s nice to know I can do that as well but not have to carry such a big thing around just to have the feature “There”.

ParticipantThanks Titan. I’m still heading towards the DDJ-SZ with VDJ or Serato.
To be honest, I looked at the Denon MCX8000 (after Terry’s comments above) and it has all the features I want i.e. same as the SZ but can work stand-alone with USB’s as well. It just seemed a bit more complicated/less intuitive and, again being totally honest, something in me just wants a Pioneer set-up as it’s more familiar to the CDJ set-up I see DJ’s using in clubs.

I stand corrected. http://www.pioneerdj.com/en/product/controller/ddj-sz/black/overview/ states that it is supported. Makes me wonder if there is any difference at all between DDJ-RZ and -SZ? If the -SZ gives 1:1 feature parity across RekordboxDJ, Serato and Virtual DJ – I don’t really see the point in getting a -RZ.

KeymasterExactly Tord.

ParticipantHi everyone.
Just thought I’d close this out by saying I’ve ended up buying the SX2 (which was none of the 3 I was originally considering!).
The SZ seems great but it really is a huge controller. Its size and the fact it was twice the price of the SX2 were deciding factors for me.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their feedback.
All the best.
Kris
P.S. Next project is the move from VDJ to Serato!September 19, 2016 at 8:53 am #2447261Terry_42
KeymasterI think you will like it. All the best with your project and let us know how it goes.
