Honestly I am never again using templates from the internet. Got screwed due to wrong wording 2 times.
It cost me about 90 bucks to get a contract from a law office and I am using that.
Of course I cannot make it available since it is their copyright.
Also at some of our DJ courses you get a contract template (like the wedding DJ course).

Can you tell us then what wording caused the problem so we can at least not make that mistake?

    The problem was this section:
I agree to work from XX:XXpm to XX:XXpm
    or 2nd time
agree to work for X hours…
both ended with: Overtime: For additional hours the charge is XXX amount.

However overtime is a “lax” statement in most countries and there is a fixed percentage of what is considered overtime and what not… so I got not paid for the extra 2 hours as it was considered “good practice” to just do so.

So instead you should always write:
after the agreed period has expired each hour is billed with XXX amount on top of the agreed fee, whereas the minimum charge is always an hour.

One thing I need to add to my wedding contract. “You may not change to a new venue in the middle of the reception.”

Not kidding. They decided to move to a smaller venue then expected I would pack up and follow them.

    Wow,
Seems I have opened the proverbial can of worms here, maybe this could be an article or topic for Phil and the team to cover off on.

    Thanks all

Yeah, that was the same night I was assaulted by the bride’s sister. I suppose I could put ‘no assaulting the DJ’ in the contract as well, but you’d think that would be self-explanatory.

But yeah Terry is 100% right. Your contract needs to be able to pass the legal test of whatever jurisdiction you live in, so using a template isn’t the smartest option.

My insurance company required that my contract be bulletproof before they took me on.

Also local laws vary widely from country to country, so what makes my contract iron-clad, might make yours worthless.

I’ve been using a modified version of the contract supplied in the DDJT’s Wedding course without issue here in NYC for 2 years now. I haven’t had it reviewed by a lawyer, but my mobile dj company is well insured and I make sure to explicitly list the number of performance hours included at the agreed upon fee.
