First question: did you buy the full RB DJ software? Or just download the free version?

What I though might be happening with the H4N, is that your inputs are mic only. In which case it makes sense that your input level is (very) HOT. I did a quick search on Google and found this Youtube tutorial, telling you that indeed, pluggin line signals straight into the mic inputs will sound distorted. It also shows what you need to get to make it work.

^ Yup – that. If you still have your receipt, go switch it for the H1. The H1 has switchable line/mic inputs and is smaller and cheaper. I have one and use it all the time. Solid little unit.

I had a similar situation with one of my dj programs (VDJ) while trying to record line signal from my mixer. I had to go into the software settings and lower the output. That’s all it took. Recordbox is new (and foreign to me) so I’m not sure they’ll let you adjust that. About your recorder, I’d send that thing back and grab a TASCAM DR-40. There’s a great tutorial on using it to record sets along with crowd noise on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_PEn5chbK0
