Don’t mind D-Jam, the Easter week got my sense of time completely messed up anyway, and on top of it Daylight Saving Time is coming on Sunday, which gives me always a kind of a jet-lag.

My brain is all on Garage this week. This one rolling around in my head:

    Title: Ripgroove
    Artist: Double 99
    Label: Satellite

    Genre(s): Speed Garage, House
    Year released: 1997

Don’t you remember the late 90s? When it seemed the clubs were full of a sophistication as DJs and producers experimented with different sounds? Many old schoolers would remember when Armand Van Heldon started a trend by creating house with the rhythm kit of jungle…thus known as Speed Garage.

While Van Heldon can claim the credit as innovator, other producers soon followed, mostly copying his sound. Double 99 was a duo from the UK who blatantly sampled Heldon’s remix of “Sugar is Sweeter” but ended up with a bumpin anthem to the late 90s club scene. I actually first heard this tune on the infamous Pump Up The Volume documentary, but ended up buying it for the memories it brought.

Now to what came after Speed Garage…

    Title: Something (Skippy Mix)
    Artist: The Artful Dodger
    Label: Centric Records

    Genre(s): UK Garage, 2-Step
    Year released: 1998

As fast as Speed Garage caught attention and then exploded into way too many unimaginative copycat vinyls, producers in the UK found new innovation by taking out movement of house and tweaking the beat into what many know as 2-Step. You listen to the tune and you’ll see how much it differs from that of house. I remember many clubs experimenting with 2-Step nights in an effort to bring sophistication to the floor, but unfortunately in Chicago, the yuppies who frequented these clubs didn’t get into it, but I have heard it was popular in the UK.

The Artful Dodger has to be one of the foremost names in 2-Step, as the band’s production work went hand in hand with the popularity of the subgenre. I know I can’t hear of a talk on 2-Step without The Artful Dodger mentioned.

While I never really played the sound as a DJ, I do enjoy it on my own for a change of pace.

@D-Jam that’s cool! I’m not really into house music but damn, that horn from the instrumental couldn’t make me not move 🙂

p.s. that Artful Dodger track was golden even it’s way out of my style^^
