The Mixtrack quad is basically the Mixtrack pro 2 with volume faders (Not gain though) and EQ controls for decks 3/4. (Me personally, I didn’t like the 2 or quad due to the shallow jog wheels.) Considering you’re primarily a 2 deck guy, you should be fine. As for Vdj and MIXXX, can’t help you. Although from my understanding, there is really no support in MIXXX for the MTP2. Also, the Mixtrack pro 2 & 3 can’t support 4 deck djing, or to put it in a different way, they’re not designed for it. You would either have to use your keyboard and mouse or maybe an add on thing to control the other two decks unless you want to start getting into mapping everything. Either way, you’d probably be left wanting for a proper 4 deck controller at some point like the Reloop Terminal mix 8, Gemini G4V, American Audio VMS 5 or VMS 4.1 or something along those lines that lets you control gain, volume, and EQs for 3/4, that you can’t really map to the MTP 2 & 3.

Not a lot of help I’m sure, but my advice to you is to save up for a good 4 deck controller (unless you already bought the quad) and the unlimited license for VDJ if you don’t have it so you don’t have to worry about whether or not it works with your version of VDJ and since it’s your main software, you’d be supporting the devs and get all sorts of cool features you don’t get with free software.

I thought that the Pro 3 would be my best bet, but say I turn Virtual DJ into 4-deck mode while it is running on Pro 3. Then will it club two decks as 1, as Virtual DJ does with 4-decks? I mean you can cross-fade only between left and right, but alter eq/gain for all 4, in the software. So, like will the Pro 3 behave in the same way, EQ, gain and Cross-fading between Left and Right only, or will it shut down completely and refuse to work with 4-deck mode? I have no problem in using the mouse to control gain/eq changes individually for each of the 4-decks, but I want to retain the basic functionality of my controller while I crossfade between left and right, because these are tricky to do with a mouse. So if my controller treats the 2-left decks as 1 and the 2-right decks as 1, I will be fine. But if it starts showing errors or jumping around, I will go for the Quad 4. 2-deck DJing is fine there, as you said, so I ought to be fine working on that. I haven’t bought anything yet, and companies like Reloop, unfortunately, are not available on my store or are outside my budget, in case I bought it in USD off amazon. By the way, do all these controllers that you mentioned work fine on 2-deck as well?

Thanks for telling about the Quad 4.

Can’t address the hardware points, but if memory serves, the difference between the free version of VDJ and the paid version is that the free version doesn’t let you use a controller at ALL.

However, Mixxx does have community supported mappings for the various Mixtrack Pros (but not the quad). “Community supported” is a very different thing when you’re talking about Open Source Software, since really, the entire program is community supported, but I can’t comment too directly on the quality of the setup – I follow Mixxx because a free open source DJ package is good to know about, but I don’t use it any more.

Thanks for telling me about VDJ not supporting controllers in the LE version. I only use 4-decks in VDJ on special occasions, and where I play, there are only the LE versions available, so no chance of getting a controller license either. Looks like the Quad 4 is out for me because it doesn’t have proper Mixxx support either, and would fail. I’m gonna go for the Pro 3, I’ve heard it is better than the Pro 2.

I’d say get a Pioneer DDj SB2 or American Audio VMS 4.1 instead. Don’t get me wrong, the MTP3 is an awesome controller. (I own the mk1) But since you’re talking about needing 4 decks, the SB2 will give you better bang for your buck and it’s supported in MIXXX as well. The American Audio VMS 4.1 as it’s also supported in MIXXX and I’d say even better than the sb2 in terms of 4 deck mixing and has more PRO features than the sb2. Trust me, it’s better to wait and save up for a good controller than it is to buy something and then realize a year or so later you wish it had more on it.

Just to clear up a little confusion – there are four main version of Virtual DJ currently available.

Virtual DJ Home Edition (ie. the totally free one anyone can download): does not work with any external hardware.
Virtual DJ LE (ie. the one that is packaged with some controllers): only works with the hardware it is sold with. There will be significant discounts if you upgrade from LE to Infinity.
Virtual DJ Controller Edition: Full version of Virtual DJ, but only works on the once specific piece of hardware that the licence was paired with.
Virtual DJ Infinity (formerly PRO): works with any hardware and has free updates. Available either as a one time payment, or as a monthly subscription.
