Honestly, I’d say the amount that you should have is the amount you can keep up. Some might disagree with me, but the key to success these days is social networking, and the more vectors you have to infect your audience with your meme/brand, the better your odds of success.

However, you must take care that you are actively able to ENGAGE with your audience on all of these. It’s not enough just to fire-and-forget a bunch of self promotion, you have to interact with not only your audience but also the other artists on these sites if you are to succeed. With how much presence you are trying to have, are you truly able to engage with the communities there? If not, THEN you might have too much.

My rule of social media – Don’t promote to your audience, engage with your audience. Make them your friends.

Gotcha. So, being an independent artist, should I post and share videos of my other favorite artists as well as interests on my media? Would that help to bring more attention because my main site that I am now working on is a free site by weebly so it doesn’t show up in search engines? I can’t pay for a domain just yet. I don’t even have a bank account. I try to keep it as uncluttered as possible, but it seems impossible. I used to post tons of articles and even video game links on it because my project is inspired by video games, but I stopped because it feels like too much though it really isn’t. I post convention videos, cosplay, and other things it’s associated with.

I always felt “enough” is when you covered your bases.

I’ll see some DJs literally sign up for everything they can find, and then have 10-20 icons on their websites of Social Media. Funniest are when they try to use LinkedIn to push new mixes or events.

You should only sign up on what will actually reach your target market, and not be annoying with it. So signing up for Facebook and then friending 5000 people whom you regularly spam isn’t going to get you anywhere but likely banned.

Looking at what you’re doing now, I think you’re good. If you’re going to post DJ mixes, then you might want to consider Mixcloud, Mixcrate, and/or house-mixes.com

I’m considering mixcloud eventually. I don’t use LinkedIn as I heard it was mainly for resumes. I have no need. That would be pointless. I was on Reverbnation at one time, but it became a pain to update, so I deleted. I only use Google + because my Youtube profile is connected to it. And I don’t spam. The purpose is to get real fans not beg people to follow. I watched a cosplay video by FanService Renji on Youtube that presented the same kind of message: Not spamming your page all over the place. Paying for likes is also a bad idea as it’s not real.

I personally do share videos and other links that I find useful, interesting, or amusing – especially from other artists that work in the same field/genres I do. I try not to post too much, but I do try to post at least a thing or two every week just so that I stay on the radar.
