If it’s at a club they likely have some kind of mixer or sound board for DJs to connect to – so just both plug into an open channel on that and have at ‘er!

If they don’t, track down either a small live board that has two stereo input channels (or four mono) and plug each controller into that, or track down an extra DJ mixer and use two line-ins to get the job done.

Failing all of that, daisy chain – S4 into a line-in on your SX, then your SX into the master PA. This is not the best solution, but it will work in a pinch.

    Good luck!

Indeed a small (for example Yamaha MG06 3gen) will do nicely and won’t break the bank. It’s a handy tool to have as a DJ.

Work? Yes. Many PA’s don’t like open channel switching like this though. It might lead to some very nasty (& unprofessional and potentially harmful) sounds when you switch. Not saying it will … it might, but it’s a risk I don’t want to take.

But … and this is the big but … how come this is on you? Most clubs won’t allow DJs to mess with their house setup, which is what you are suggesting here and I am pretty sure that if there is a house technician he is gonna frown at the RCA switch.

My suggestion is to talk to the house tech ahead of time and ask him what facilities they have for back to back controller DJs. If there is nothing you can ask him for advice and come to a mutually agreeable solution, that you might not have to supply.

So, my advice based on many years of experience, don’t mess with the booth. Ask the tech what to connect where. They are more than willing to help and appreciate you asking more than they do you going off and hooking up stuff without asking.

I am just trying to be as prepared as possible. The guy who’s running the party said that if they can’t find a way to hook up my controller, I am gonna have to use their kontrol s4 which i have only ever used once very briefly. The thought of doing my first proper live show with an alien controller and software completely terrifies me haha. I’d much rather they put me on CDJ’s as at least there wouldn’t be any messing around with software!

I looked at the Yamaha and it doesn’t seem to have any RCA inputs which is what I’d need to connect my DDJ-SX. Do you have any other suggestions?

Are there any other cables/items I should be buying ahead of time to make things run as smoothly as possible?

Would it also not be rude to phone the house technician ahead of the guy running the party? I don’t particularly want to upset the apple cart so to speak!

Thanks again for all your help.

I would definitely use what you are used to that night, i.e. your own controller.

Most small mixers feature 1/4″ jack inputs even for the stereo-channels. But there are relatively cheap RCA-Jack adapters that you just stick on the end of an RCA cable. Bring 2 extra for the other controller and you are done.

You can ask the guy running the party if it’s ok to call the house tech. I don’t see the problem, but I am not him.

Their S4 should have RCA in that you ought to be able to use for this purpose.

Good point that, Deathy. I was operating on the premise that the S4 would have to leave the booth with the previous DJ (or come in later with the next DJ). But if it’s the “house” S4 (who thinks of such a thing, really), then yeah, that might be the shortest route.

Yeah… since OP is potentially expected to perform on the S4, that means it should be available as a through instead, I reckon.

    No argument there.

Doing this 7 days a week a few times a day, you sometimes tend to come to a conclusion (read: think you understand the need) too quickly. Definitely true in this case.

Yeah. That’s why I get the big bucks, I think outside the booth. hahahahahahahahahahah

This has been super helpful thanks!

In terms of connecting the two controllers, do you have any idea how that would work in terms of me using serato on my laptop? I understand that I’d plug my rca cables into an input channel on the s4 but then how would I move forward from there?

Just open the channel fader for the channel you plugged into and done. Make sure on your controller that you run everything around 0dB. So take a tracks, find the loudest part, set your channel gain (might not need to if it’s autolevelling) so the peaks just go out of the green. Then turn up your controller master til those lights go just out of green in peaks. Then adjust the channel gain on the S4 so the signal comes in below the clip (top led). From there on out, use the S4 channel fader as your master volume.

And I’d be able to use my laptop and serato using this method? It’s just the master volume that the s4 would provide?

Once you set everything properly on the S4, you can do everything else from your DDJ-SX.
