LED = LCD but with a different backlighting technology.

LCD works by way of a light shining behind your screen and then the pixels opening up to let light pass through or not. Traditionally this was done by a kind of tube light, but in the last decade pretty much all of it used led for lighting.

Something new is on the way, oled, but that is still pretty expensive. The difference between regular led and oled screens, is that in oled every pixel has it’s own led light source. This means a pixel that is off is actually black, whereas in regular led lcd a little of the light behind the closed pixel will still filter through, a black led lcd screen is always very dark grey at best. Since contrast isn’t all that important for studio/DJ purposes imho, it’s not very useful to spend the extra buck on oled at this time.

When I had my home studio, I had two 24″ screens mounted on top of each other, one sat under a pretty big angle on my desk (I mad my own display mount), the other on top of it. The bottom one would show my mixer screen, the top one the track view. I found that to work much easier than side-by-side mounted. That often felt like either a ping-pong match, or forced me to have my head turned to a side for long periods of time.

You can consider using touch screen, I used one for my bottom screen so I could move a fader without leaving the track screen with my mouse. But that’s a bonus.

Just about all monitors support 1920×1080 (full HD) resolution, which imho is sufficient to about 27″ monitors. If you go bigger, the next step up in resolution might make sense. Be aware that beyond about 24″ the price of monitors per inch increase goes up exponentially.

120 euro for a 24″ is about the bottom, 27″ at least 50% up in price, 30″ is around 800 euros!

Finally the inputs, clearly you don’t use VGA anymore, but be sure that your computer/video card supports multiple monitors if you decide to go that route and what connections it will take. Since you won’t be playing sound over the monitor, DVI is still plenty enough quality. HDMI works of course as does DisplayPort.
