With the most smooth sounding headphones it is ok!

It’s not a big secret that studio monitors (including the Mackies) are not made to sound nice, they are made to sound correct, i.e. reproduce the sound as closely as possible. And that means that they will always sound more “tiring” than regular speakers. While there will always be some sound difference between monitors, generally they will all sound like that. Add to that the fact that the 4″ are already a bit low on low, making them sound even harsher because the balance in the sound will be slightly less. And for you this seems to translate to headaches and being tired.

The room acoustics could also play a role, but to fix that particular problem is SO FAR outside the scope of what we do here at DDJT, I am not even gonna start getting into that.

I would not opt for HiFi speakers personally, it could make more sense to get some 8″/10″ small active PA speakers. At least you can take those with you to play at a party as well.

The reason for this is they are not designed to be used for listening to music for long periods of time. They are designed for multi-track mixing and production work. So it is important that they show you all the faults within the music as true as they can. They are doing the job they are designed to do – provide a very flat frequency response.

Also make sure you aren’t driving them too hard. They have small drivers and are never going to give the same sound as larger pairs of speakers.

Hifi speakers on the other hand are designed to be easy to listen to. For simply mixing practice, I would use a pair of Hifi speakers every time. As indeed I do. I use my Sony Mini Hifi for DJing Practice at home

However, if I am producing or mixing a track then I either mix it in my headphones or go and use the studio up at Uni – when you have a studio with £60k of Dynaudio Acoustics monitors available it seems a shame not to use it.. I do appreciate that very few people have that opportunity though!

Thanks guys for your fast feedback 🙂

Bob 6397 can you recommend me some good hifi speakers for djing at home?

That would depend on budget and which country you are in.. This is a multi-national forum and it’s hard to tell sometimes!

Don’t forget that EDM is usually compressed to hell which won’t be kind to your ears.
