    Well that is easy:

RANE 64 $3,398.00 – special use only, do not need
RANE MP2014 $4,324.00 – more special use only, do not need
PIONEER DJM 900NEXUS $2,829.00 – totally outdated the day it came out, do not need
900SRT $3,259.00 – I have an excellent Serato setup and this unit can actually do less – do not need
CDJ 900NEXUS $1,979.00 – outdated for quite some time – do not need
CDJ 2000NEXUS 2,829.00 – outdated for quite some time – do not need
CDJ 2000NXS2 $3,129.00 – outdated for quite some time, but in a new package and with bigger screens – do not need
XONE DB2 $1,999.00 – special need only, do not have that need -> do not need
DB4 $3,399.00. – special need only, do not have that need -> do not need

Wow it is cool how much money I just saved 🙂

Now if you would have said MCX 8000 yes that maybe gets my money… but it is fairly cheap compared to the above. So usually I get between 1000-1400 for a gig the MCX is one nights pay… that should work out.

Not just you, Deathy, not just you …

They keep telling me to step away from the controller in the store… I hope it’s waterproof.

By the way … who can afford it is the title of this topic.

In all my 38 years behind the decks (coming up on 39 soon) – and presumably long before then – DJ-ing professionally was something only those with money to begin with or those making serious money DJ-ing could afford. Prices of gear were ridiculous. Buying new needles alone was a serious amount of money each month.

This lasted up until the latest installment of CDJs with a DJM mixer (or Rane or Xone or …), basically any analogue system.
And while there are some new features every time, it is usually better implementations of old stuff (color instead of b/w screen, high res and slightly bigger screens) but hardly anything spectacular.

The last couple of years controllers have made this the most affordable period to get into DJ-ing EVER!

From a sub-300 starter controller to the most expensive Pioneer on the market (2000) it is all super affordable.

So if you don’t mind me saying so, ALL digital gear is affordable for the level you are at.

That is fair… if this is your primary hobby, it is certainly much cheaper than a lot of hobbies. Cheaper than owning hobby vehicles like four wheelers or snow machines (snow mobiles to non-Alaskans), going on holiday as a hobby (heck, this hobby might theoretically lead to you getting paid to travel), etc., etc. Heck, at the lower end, it’s not more expensive than being a hardcore tabletop gamer with the D&D and the boardgames and all that.

The problem is, even those of us who know what we have is perfectly sufficient for our needs still want the better gear. We don’t get it, but boy, DO WANT!

Insert meme pic of cat pointing at the meat that’s captioned “I need this.” (All my editor buttons disappeared on me, so I can’t italicize, bold, insert pics, etc.)

It seems this topic has potential to bring about various opinions…and yes, opinions can vary.

Okay, first things first – the dollar is not at 50 cents. Not even close. Don’t be so dramatic! 😉

But back on topic… DJ gear has always cost more in Canada than in the US – even when the dollar was above par. Part of that has to do with crappy distribution networks. Too many brands use Erikson, a DJ shop in Montreal, to act as their national distributor instead of setting up their own network. Adding that extra middleman just makes everything that little bit more expensive. It’s why I cross border shop for a lot of my gear. Hell, I bought an X1600 before Christmas and saved over $800 including taxes, shipping and the crappy exchange rate. That kind of difference isn’t because of exchange rate – it’s just some jerk-store owners being greedy (both those guys in Montreal and your local shop).

As for how to afford it all – buy what you need to get the job done, treat it well so it lasts a long time, and don’t get carried away on GAS (gear acquisition syndrome).

My apologies, you are correct, it’s not close at all, it closed at 1.41 today. I guess that’s not dramatic at all. Let’s see….the dollar is sitting at the lowest its been in like 11yrs…nooooo…not dramatic at all. Anyhow, enough of that….Yes, I’m quite familiar with both Erikson and SFM marketing all wanting to get a piece of the pie.

Manufacturers run products through distributor’s because it’s easier and cheaper for them to maintain products abroad. Doing so helps maintain cash flow and operating capital to meet bottom line requirements by their shareholders.

Simply, I was just stating fact that product is expensive when I made the original post, and when you take a look at the entire dj community, the majority being beginners starting out, this stuff can be quite pricey.

Finally, like I said previously…opinions can vary. Have a great day!

The thing is that you picked the high end (analogue) products that have always been expensive. There has never been a cheap Rane mixer, DJM, CDJ (900 or above), Xone mixer before. And those products are all (no exception) variations on old and very old themes.

While I am sure there is still a market for them, it’s a dying breed, of that I am fairly certain. And with more people switching to digital and thus less people buying traditional/analogue gear, the chance of prices for this stuff ever dropping as a result of big numbers sold is not very realistic.

So if your point is “Great New ANALOGUE Gear for 2016, but who can afford it”, I would say you are very right, with the provision that things (again) haven’t changed in that respect compared to the period 1975-2016. Personally I think you should have added the new SL1200s at 4.000 a piece to emphasize the point 😀 .

If you were to take all the great new gear as reported in the DDJT NAMM 2106 round up, you will see many great new products with realistic price tags.
Even the new Denon flagship MCX-8000 with everything it has to offer will retail for under 1.300 dollars I think. While not cheap, it is certainly high affordable for those in need of such a unit.

I’ll second your opinion that opinions may vary and I will stay far away from any exchange rate / distribution system discussion LOL.

And with us agreeing to disagree where necessary, I wish you a great day too!
