Do you use iTunes or similar to organise your collection?

iTunes is a slightly awkward bit of software to use but it will let you do this job properly – and organise your folder structure as well if you want it to. The advantage of iTunes is Traktor will be able to read it’s database so any playlists you do in iTunes are accessible from inside Traktor straight away.

I personally use MP3tag, which is free.

That said, there’s nothing that’s going to make cleaning up tags on a large connection anything less than a massive amount of work – them’s just the breaks. MP3tag has some features that can simplify it, but you are going to want to get your hands seriously dirty on this one to ensure your tags don’t end up worse after your effort than before it.

Before you start this adventure, I would highly recommend you back up your tracks if you have the disk space, just in case something goes wrong and your tags end up a complete hash.

    Good luck!

Yeah, I use Tag&Rename. And I agree that “doing” large collections is a major effort.

Since I just can not stand iTunes I am a fond user of MediaMonkey for managing my library and editing tags.

Which is a pity (not a big fan of iTunes myself – think it’s the worst product ever to come out of Cupertino), because the integration with ALL major DJ software and some very handy features, especially for DJs does make it a very likely candidate.

MP3Tag is free and you can use it on both Windows and Mac through Wine or virtualsed Windows OS.
I’m also not a fan of iTunes and just use that for songs I don’t DJ with (eg. early Megadeth and other metal and so on).

Text removed due to commercial content. This is not free software. If you point to software you use that is not free, you should a) be very clear about the fact that it is paid software, b) refrain from promoting it in commercial terms “… if you think your time is worth even 1,00 USD an hour …” and c) don’t try to write the same comment to multiple and OLD! threads.

Since you are not using a company name in your profile, it will stay with this warning.

Next transgression WILL result in a ban, however.

I personally find that tags are much easier to do when the tracks are all named correctly. Most tracks I buy are all named, tagged, metadata is good. But for those that have incorrect genre, or numbers in em, I use Bulk rename utility to keep everything uniform, then remove the tag, and then retag with mp3tag based on the filename.
