Well, the DJM350 doesn’t get my vote. It’s the low end Pioneer offering and imho more prosumer than pro. I’ve used it with two CDJ350s and found it hopelessly limiting. Even though I don’t “do” much FX, I found the standard 4 effects (one of which is a filter, which I don’t really consider an FX) meager at best.

The higher end options in the Pioneer catalog will quickly run outside your budget I am afraid, as will the high end Denon units (like the X1600). Also they are all 4-channel.

You could look into the Denon X600 as a 2-channel alternative. It has DVS option too and a boatload of inputs with the unparalleled matrix system.

The thing is with two-channel you will quickly end up in the battle mixer corner with usually relatively little features (no FX for example). Probably not what you are looking for.

Ya, I can’t throw a vote behind any Pioneer mixers. I know I’m going against the grain here, but I hate their top of the line stuff so doubt I’d feel much better about anything else they put out. Sloppy gains. Inaccurate VU meters. Short throw upfaders. Stupid placement of the USB input. Hate, hate, hate. Did I mention I’m not a fan? lol Decent effects though. That is their saving grace. There is some link functionality you get having the 1000s paired to a high end Pio mixer though – worth being aware of.

Denon X1600s are a fantastic alternative if you can find one on sale within your budget (I picked up one before Christmas at a hell of a price from a US distributor). The X600 has almost as many features and has the same solid build – so if you can find one that might be a very good fit. They are discontinued so finding one could be the issue.

As your 1000s have soundcards you can look at non-USB mixers. I’ve never seen one in person but I like the look of the Reloop stuff. If you want crazy bang for the buck I know a few people who absolutely swear by the Behringer DDM 4000 (including one guy who installed it at his club and used it as the daily driver there for a number of years. Behringer can be hit or miss with product so you have to be really careful, but this model may be a hit. And it’s cheap. And feature packed.

Ah, I love mixers. They are still one of the components that get me most excited…

Just thought I would update, appreciate the replies and after all the info posted and all the reviews and info I have read online I have decided to stump up for the Traktor Kontrol Z2 its the one I kept going back too and most people seem to praise it for its abilities and value for money so think it should be ideal for me 😉

I’ve used all kinds of mixers over the years. For the last 15 years I have only bought into higher end mixers. The best 4 channel mixer I have ever used is the XONE62 by Allen & Heath. Mine was an original built in the U.K. Not overly fancy with effects, but superb sound quality and workmanship. I have also owned the DB2, DB4 and jumping over to Pioneer, the DJM 2000 NEXUS all of which were brand new purchases. This was the only way I could test and get a feel for what I truly wanted. Also, I find as ya get older the more picky and critical ya become.

I’ll be honest with ya, the build quality of Pioneer is OK at best. Nothing compared to A & H. I now have a DENON DNX1700, again a superb quality build. For me, quality ranks over “bells and whistles”. The bottom line is, you need to figure out budget, timeline and scenarios in which you plan on using the mixer, and then research the brand and model that best fits your needs and budget. If you have the option of visiting a reputable re-seller of dj gear, check out what brands they offer and see if you can test drive a few to get a feel for them to help narrow down what you want.

I would truly suggest getting a 12″ 4 channel mixer. This will allow you capabilities to expand on with additional gear/channel use should you desire to do so at a later point in time. Try looking at the A & H xone 43 or 43c as well as the denon dnx 1600. You won’t go wrong with either of these units. However, if you truly want pioneer, then go for a 750 or 850.

If you want an all in one controller unit, I will have to stop here because I have never used one and nor do I want one. Therefore, I can not offer any opinion other than they are flashy and neat looking.

    Good luck in your search…CHEERS!

One additonal mixer I did own but did not mention above was the Xone 92 linear model. Didn’t like it at all. The faders were way too loose, and there were designs issues that bothered me so I sold it right quick.
