ParticipantI’d assume iTunes, unless they’re totally about cloud/streaming now.
For older stuff, I’d check into remix services, or even just buying and encoding them yourself from 2nd-hand records and CDs.

ParticipantIf you are in the UK, try http://www.ilikemusic.com/ilm-media/
Uncompressed 44.1kHz/16bit WAV files, at from 48p a track (Depending on how many tracks you buy at once – you buy credits and then the track)
They have an almost unbelievable back catalog of tracks – almost any commercially released track ever.
Other than that, I use:
iTunes (occasionally the AUS iTunes store as well as the UK one as they tend to get tracks before we do).
Amazon MP3 (If I check the quality) (UK or USA stores)
7digital
Mastermix
DMC
Google Play
BeatportThere are loads out there… There is a page on the PPL site on who exactly has licences to be a legal source somewhere as well, but I can’t find the link..

ModeratorIf you search the forums you should find quite a few posts over the last couple of years on this topic.

ParticipantA belated thanks for all of your help, very useful.
I’ve been using ilikemusic and Beatport and have also bought a few mixes from Legitmix which is a great place to find mixes and mashups.
Thanks again!

ParticipantI cannot offer you statistics so much as a concern to be aware of – if you wish to use Mixed in Key to determine the key and energy level of your track, I understand iTunes protects the music too much for you to be able to do that in-situ. According to what I’ve read on the MiK forum, you need to burn-n-rip if you plan to run MiK against iTunes tracks, which is a pretty big PitA.

ParticipantI wish the moderators would just make a few sticky threads for stuff like this to make it easier to find. I’d be interested in finding out if there is any sites that offer formats other than mp3 such as flac. (Price comparison would be nice as well).

ModeratorThe thing is … too much stickies and the new posts don’t even show up on the first result page anymore. Not practical.
Terry spent quite some time and effort on making (supersticky) in making a number of video’s with FAQ topics.
Not everything is in there of course. As moderators we are volunteers and already spend quite a bit of time on keeping this forum clean and the friendliest on the web. With busy real life jobs and active DJ-ing careers as well (Terry more than me), there just isn’t enough time to keep track of how often a subject comes up and if it comes up often enough, to collect all the relevant data and put it in a sticky. And then there is the subject of keeping things actual.
Good thing we have the blog for that! And of course the search function. It may not be beautiful, but it does work.
But we are open for suggestions on topics for the next set of videos.

ParticipantAnother consideration for many topics is that the digital world moves fast… what we say about sites that make commercial digital music available today may be drastically different mere months from now. The big picture might not change so quickly, but some of the details will certainly have shifted.
Stickies are more useful, IMO, for forum rules and such, and keep the dynamic topics dynamic.

ParticipantI visited the charity shop this afternoon and picked up 4 compilation albums (each containing 2 or 3 CDs), three of which were released last year with a total of 160 songs for £15, and I’ve spent the evening ripping them to my laptop, so I’d say hit the 2nd hand shops and get ripping.

ParticipantActually, make that 230 tracks. With the risk of sounding smarmy, I’d say that’s a bit cheaper than iTunes or other audio download services.

ModeratorJust don’t fall for the digital DJ trap of hoarding tracks!
230 tracks, that is about half of Phil’s entire collection!
It’s why we say, be VERY picky about what you let into your collection and once your collection has the right size for you (not counting mobile DJs, different story, but even they should have a core and a request collection), typically between 500-1500 tracks, toss one out for every track you put in.

ParticipantAlso, you bein’ in the UK pete, you might want to be careful talkin’ ’bout rippin’… that’s illegal there again.

ParticipantThe 12k+ tracks is my entire music collection, both for personal use (it’s rare that you’ll ever find me not listening to music, hence why I enjoy working security in the clubs) and which will be used if I ever DJ live, at which point I’d create specific playlists to take out with me.
As for the whole ripping music laws, I wasn’t aware it had been changed (again?). Really can’t make up their minds, can they?

ParticipantSeriously. You guys sometimes make the American music industry’s attitude seem sane.
Nah, not really, but you got your own weirdnesses to add to the mix. heh.
But America is king at *bleep*ed up attitudes toward aggression toward one’s own customers.

ParticipantThe search feature can definitely be your friend. If you haven’t done so already, do a search on “music pools” and you’ll find a plethora of topics. To get you started in your search; however, I’ve provided a few that are pretty popular with many folks on the site… of course there are plenty of others.
