well I would start with the classics? Old Hip hop like Grandmaster Flash, Africa Bombaata etc. and then work my way up to the new stuff. Get on Spotify or Apple Music and play the hip hop channels to dig in.

I have been dj’ing trance but quickly got bored with it, rap is my real love but I also know that its going to be totally different. There are lots of vocals for one and beatmatching is very different. I know one mixing technique would be a quick cut i’m sure there are others I just dont know them. Surely there are other techniques and that is where it seems like this is where its going to vary from trance very much.

Transitions are very different with rap music. I would check out some videos by DJ Angelo and maybe even subscribe to our Scratching for Controller DJs course, as scratching is a main part of DJing hip hop. Beatmatching is something that you actually do rarely need when DJing hop.

^ I hear DJs say that a lot, but I’ve always matched my hip-hop sets.

If you have the fundamentals of mixing down, then hip-hop is really no different. Grab a few tracks that are the in the same bpm range, and just watch not to accidentally overlap your lyrics.

I’d agree, that beatmeatching, and more importantly, phrasematching are still critical with Hip Hop. Another good free resource is DJ TLM. Check out his youtube channel. He has some pretty good stuff on there, and is a real down-to-earth dude. I believe he recently teamed with with DJCity as well. If you’re serious about Hip Hop, you’ll definitely want to learn to scratch. It’s an integral part of the culture. DDJT has an awesome scratch course. I’d keep an eye out for the next time it opens up.
