My only caution to this would be that flash drives are susceptible to corruption by static shock so you would be wise to have a backup drive.

Squarecell – I have never heard of this before? Surely a properly insulated drive (Plastic body) can’t be susceptible to static shocks?

    Back on topic:

I have done this before – It works fine as long as the USB drive is reasonably fast. So I mean ideally a USB 3.0 which is rated at least 100Mb/s. I use one (Sandisk Extreme) which is rated 240Mb/s. It is actually faster loading tracks from that than it is from the internal drive. However, I wouldn’t use it for all my storage as frankly I prefer having it all on my internal HDD… That’s just me though..

On the USB I actually have an install of windows which can entirely replace my internal drive if it corrupts. So I can still DJ even without an internal drive..

On top of that, my music library (and every other file I own) is on at least 3 different HDD’s at any one time. Plus a backup in a different city (back at my parent’s house) on a NAS drive which I update every week or so..

My data is more valuable to me than anything else I own. The amount of time that I (and any other DJ) has put into our music collection is worth thousands of pounds on its own. Protect your data – make backups. Storage is so cheap that there is no reason not to these days.. 🙂

Yep … USB sticks are way more vulnerable to outside influence. And if they go south, they usually go south forever.
I’ve lost some sticks that I could not revive or save data from (even with high-end pro-grade software) whereas hard disk usually DO allow for easier rescue.

As far as using USB 3.0 memory sticks, this is clearly true when you use them only with a laptop. If you plan on using them in other (club) gear too, better make sure in advance that the gear in question can actually handle USB 3.0 sticks and that they can handle the particular brand/model of stick you are using.

While things like compatibility and backward compatibility all work fine on flyers, real day practices dictate a bit more caution and research.
