Be nervous.. But not too nervous!

In Feb, I played my first set to over 300 people (to 1000 no less..) and I was bricking it before I started.. ONce I was going, and in the groove, it went perfectly.. Being nervous is good – but don’t let it control you! Planning at least the first couple of mixes ahead of time will help in this case as well – whilst you are getting a feel for the crowd..

BUT, more than all of that, enjoy it and good luck 🙂

Don’t obsess too much about track selection. Prepare an opening mix of maybe three songs, then improvise from there on. Organize well your tracks in small playlists with particular vibes. Have ready twice as many tracks as you think you could play, but not way too many to help speed up track selection.

Don’t keep your eyes only on the equipment. Look at the crowd, try to connect from the distance with some of them.

And don’t fret if you make some mistake just because this crowd is so much bigger. I must admit I’ve been guilty of this some times.

    Good luck!

    What Ricky Said!

Plan your opener, If i’m playing for an hour ill usually plan, and have it timed my first 15 minutes, in them 15 minutes ill play a few different sub genres(mainly drum and bass i play so jump up, big room, liquid) and see what people like the most and go down that route!

Dont be scared to think, this isnt working lets change it up! If it aint working, change it, but also dont change it straight away give people time to get into your groove your work flow, and with this, dont expect anyone and everyone to dance from start to finish of your set!

Finally, look at your body language behind the decks, stand up tall, look confident and enjoy your self.

Thank you all, I will make sure first and foremost to enjoy it and let you know how it goes!

Just a little sub-query, is it possible to practice not talking on a mike and feeling like an idiot? 😛

Practice? Only in front of people… This is called CONFIDENCE!!! Be big, loud and be convinced that whatever you are saying, it is right. That’s all you need. Oh, and forget about anyone looking at you. Look past them when you are “making eye contact” – look slightly above them on the wall at the back of the room – anywhere but into their faces.. Nothing more disconcerting 🙂

I learnt this by being a Young Leader (through Scouting) for 5 years and mostly succeeding to control 30 8-10 year olds.. You can handle anything after that 🙂

Cheers bob, good tip with the eyes. And I admire your bravery with the kid crowd control 😛

Lol.. Life lessons well learnt 🙂 Seriously though, it has prepared me like nothing else for DJing. I now have the confidence on the mic, and the presence in the room that it needed. I really didn’t have either of these before I started scouting… 🙂
