I should say that I’m into EDM: trance, progressive trance, deep house etc

    Hi,

I’ve not used Rekordbox DJ yet but I have used Serato DJ and Traktor Scratch Pro 2.

Traktor as a program is excellent! There are some great features and the layout is very easy to get on with. It’s sturdy and reliable which is what I loved about it, plus for EDM music the Sync function is just great! However… Look in to what you plan to run it on and compatibility. I ran it on a MacBook Pro with no real issues, but I know someone who used it on a Windows laptop earlier this year and hated it because it wouldn’t run properly on Windows. I also got to try out a Kontrol S4 Mk2 recently linked to a Windows laptop and the amount of times the software glitches and we had to stop the set and restart the laptop was ridiculous and no good if your gigging.

So my advice would be to ask around with people running TPS2 on a similar system to yours before you invest.

I’m about to buy a new controller and although I was adamant Serato was the way for me I’m currently battling with myself about moving to Rekordbox DJ as it does look impressive!

Good luck on your decision just don’t rush into anything

    Thanks Sean.

I’m leaning towards Traktor and the S8. Just don’t want to regret the decision in 6 months time. I have been doing a lot of research over the last month and want to get started ?

    Hey Steve,

Regardless of your end decision; you may want to at least check out the software you can get for free first before making a commitment to Traktor since there is no free version.

I’ve never used Traktor, so I can’t really comment on how good or bad it may be. I’m only going to point out that it will cost you around $100 to find out if it’s for you.

The funny part here is that the DJ upgrade to Rekordbox also costs you ($130 I think) and mimics other software like Serato and Virtual DJ which both have free downloads.

There are a couple more free DJ downloads. Mixvibes cross and Djay.

You should start with looking at what computer you have (PC or Mac)? Then determine what software will work on your platform (Djay for example is ONLY available for Mac). Then look at which software fits what you want to accomplish. Familiarize yourself with the software. Once you found the software you like, set a budget for a controller. Then start looking at controllers that work with the software you chose and fit in your budget. This will help you narrow the list down and help you determine what will work best for you.

    Hi,

Check out some of the recent posts on the issue of bying first controllers and software.

Personally I would noty start with the hardware I have (most relevant software will play on both Windows and Mac).

Starting with your workflow is very good suggestion. If you don’t know what it is you hope to accomplish, you need to spend time thinking that through. And a lot of it will be (educated) guessing, since you lack the experience to know for sure.

It’s one of the reasons we suggest that people NOT buy the crazy expensive gear as their first controller. A good option is buying a starter controller used, especially the ones that came with full software (make sure the old owner unregisters his key). That way you can start out with the basics, learn what you need to learn. After a while you will start to know what really is important to your style of DJ-ing and what is not. You will also start to find out if your starting software is what you actually need or not. If after a while you decide that you need to change directions, you haven’t spent a fortune on gear and software.
