It really depends on how you play, personal preferences, and song structure. I usually set cue points on every track – especially on long unedited tracks over 5 minutes. Depending on the structure of the song, there are usually a couple of places you can have an intro and outro. I try to mark those points to provide some variety within the same tune. I may also drop it into audacity and edit it if I see fit.

I usually preview the next track before mixing it in and identifying mix in points etc. Before the actual gig I’m usually expected to do lots of promotion so there isn’t much time, especially the few days before it.

If you have time, definitely try and prep beforehand, my way is not for everyone but I work best under pressure.

The better you know your music, the easier it is to not have cue points. Remember most CDJs never had cue point options and with the exception of some RekordBox enabled models nothing that you could set in advance. And since you can’t write to CDs, you had to always do it on the fly.

Another example of how Digital DJ-ing offers a helpful feature that is a tool to make DJs lives easier and free up your time and energy for other creative things will in the booth.

As Bill said, this is a typical part of your workflow and that is highly personal.

Vintage hit the nail on the head, knowing your music is the most critical component. The better you know your tunes, the easier it is. I’ve also come to realize that often times you just need to let it flow… feel the vibe, the moment, and you’ll know when it’s time to change things ups. Just keep in mind your phrases. 🙂

Yeah, if I feel a track has ran it’s course or I am itching to introduce something else, I may transition way before any marker I set. And sometimes the crowd is going so ape with a track that I will actually loop or jump a large part and let it run longer than the marker. As I said, it’s tools, handy things, but they should never become “forcing”.
