You have your definitions a little mixed up…

A mashup or remix is something you do to one track to change it up (probably only a few minutes long). A mixtape is a whole DJed set (many minutes, or even hours long).

A podcast is a form of distribution, one of many possible ways you could send out your mixtapes.

I’m generalizing a bit here, but hopefully you get the basics.

A lot of people call their mixes podcasts when they are not podcasts. A podcast is serialized (usually release periodically) that can be read by an RSS feed, subscribed to, and downloaded to a podcast player.

Technically there are no podcasts on mixcloud or soundcloud since there is no way to subscribe and automatically download the content.

    Examples of podcast players:
    iphone podcast player
    Downcast
    Overcast

Yup, Rob Ticho is right. The word “podcast” is grossly misused, just like the word “cloud” in computing.

Anything that is not using RSS-feed format is not a podcast, since the whole point of podcasting is to have a standardized format that can be subscribed and delivered automatically independent of device, operating system or client software.

What’s funny is that the name “podcasts” stuck but very few people use iPods to listen to them any more.
