It comes down to software choice.
So very simple: If you want Traktor -> Z2 if you want Mixvibes Cross then the Xone.
Both do not play well with any other software. So if you would want Serato you would need something else…

But both are not that cheap.
You could simply go with a AKAI AMX and AFX combo and have all Serato Features with the DVS pack.

Traktor Z2 has full native support in VDJ8.

sorry to hijack the thread but this could also answer my question too

the traktor Z2, can that be used just as a controller until i save up and get my hands on a good pair of direct drives?

    No.

Also you do not need money for turntables, you also would need about 80-100 bucks per month to upkeep that turntables and pay for replacement needles, timecodes etc.

no? i have been told that i could, it can be used with Traktor and there is buttons on the mixer to press play and the eq’s, crossfader will control that will control the software.

i dont plan to scratch when i do get turntables, ive had a few sets before and the needles have lasted longer than 6 months

LOL … you must not have used them much. I used to play as a resident once. 6 days a week 6 hours a day. No scratching. MINIMUM of one set of needles every month. Often more than that.

If you recalculate for your 6 months that means you play (a lot) less than 6 hours a week.

    As for the Z2, here’s a picture:

My challenge to you: find the PLAY button!

It only has 4 buttons for the remix decks and that is it.

am only using this bedroom use, i dont plan to have a residence or any thing close to 6 hours a day. i bearly have time to eat never mind practice that many hours a week.

as for the controller, i can see there are no play buttons. if you look at this vido at the 9.25 mark on. hold shift and press A or B beside REL/INTL will play the music thats loaded in the decks

If you have to go into another layer to access transport controls, it is not going to be a good fit as a primary control surface. Play, Cue, and some sort of tempo control are the three basic elements you need – and you should be able to access them without having to hit a shift button.

Also you see it wrong as the timecode is spinning…
Using vinyl timecodes at home is a waste of money.
For home use get a good controller and be done with it.

If you used needles that long, then you prolly damaged your vinyl already…
My usual upkeep was (3 days Th-Sa club residence) and 2 days practice runs: 1-2 sets of needles per month and a pair of control vinyls at least. Of course control vinyl now can be cheap if you buy at a sale. Saw some Serato control vinyls for around 10-12 bucks, so you could buy a years supply for around 150-200 prolly.
