Which country are you in – this matters as the US charts tend to be around 3 months ahead of the UK charts??

What I do when I DJ discos is play a mix of the really popular (so no less than #4 in the charts) pop – anything they will know the words to works – so a bit of Ed Sheeran works – as well as some older stuff – many of them at that age will still be listening to their parents music – so some classics – big Queen hits, Disco classics – Macarena, Cha Cha Slide, Hokey Cokey etc.

Be prepared – and I would tell them that they can ask for tracks – this is the best way of knowing what they actually want!!

What I have done once or twice is prepare little (half or quarter sheet) forms with room for a name, and artist and title for two tracks. On the back it had the explanation that this is a competition. Write down your favorite track now and you favorite track ever. At the end of the night there would be a price for the best track in either category.

35 kids ment 70 tracks. Added to the really big chart/top 40 bangers of the last 2-3 years, I suddenly ended up with enough music for the 8 to 11 function. Gave away two cheesy DJ T-shirt as prices or something that I had picked up online for 5 bucks each and 10 bucks bought me a lot of piece of mind :-D.

During the evening I would ask them to let me hear how much they liked the previous track by shouting out loud.

Great fun. Once kids that age group are over the “being cool” factor and into it, they will go full out.

    So enjoy.

Don’t know if you guys have it, but in Sweden we have a music album series released twice a year, for instance “hits for kid winter party 2014”. great way to find music for the younger audience. Try making a spotify search for hits for kids and I think they have some playlist on spotify.

Oh and kids only dance to music they’ve heared before… So only play music you think they’ll recognise like ^#10 on the top list and the hits for kids

    good luck man!
