    Hey Jelle,

I’m not an expert but if i were in your Position I would get something which helps me either way. Ie if your Laptop or your Controller breaks. So since you have an iPod i would probably choose an iPad DJ-Controller since you can also use most of them with your Computer and in Case your Laptop breaks you are still able to Play on your iPod with the Controller. So either way ( if your Computer or Controller gives up on you ) you would still be able to deliver a decent performance.

    greetings from Germany,

Get a 100-125 euro mixer (Yamaha MG06 3rd gen for example) to run your controller into. Get a low end iDevice controller with some software on it which you can plug into the mixer at a moments notice. Probably a lot cheaper altogether than a single XDJ-1000 and you’d still have full controller control.

good idea the Yamaha mixer but I still own my old ecler NUO3 mixer maybe i’ll replace it and buy a mixer like the Yamaha MG06.
can you give me an example what Low end idevice controller is?

I think Vintage means any IOS compatible controller – Pioneer make a couple, as do Numark.. Stick with big brands.. I would then hook it up to an iPad (or iPod at a push but the screen may be a little small..)

    Hi Jelle,

I am going through something similar myself, trying to find a decent backup setup. I’ve got an ipad and I’ve tried the Traktor iOS app which seems to be a pretty good fall back in an emergency. In an effort to get something more “substantial” I’ve just started looking at DJ Player on iOS, which seems to have a lot of features and best of all, midi mapping for using any class compliant controller.

I’ll be experimenting with this over the next couple of weeks so I’d be happy to share my thoughts if you are interested.

Yeah iPad is good (enough). The reason I say get a simple iPad controller (which will be great to take to smaller impromptu and house parties too), rather than using it straight from the tablet, is that you can, when push comes to shove, totally continue your gig on one of those. I would not want to DJ all night on a touch screen (even though it’s possible) but rather have two jogs and some real faders.

DJ Player is by far the most feature rich and powerful iOS DJ software. It also has a very steep learning curve. I would not recommend it, unless your iOS controller is what you intend to use all the time. For backup, the obvious and far better options would be DJay 2 and Cross for example. And Traktor if that’s your software of choice.

The Reloop Beatpad 2 is just out, meaning there will probably be some used Beatpad originals around. Another option is the Numark iDJ Pro. In both cases, as said, go for used as it it’s backup stuff.

Another option would be the Pioneer WeGo, but that’s not one I’d personally recommend on account of the lay-out of the buttons.
