    Can I ask you whereabouts in the world you are? (This affects the licensing as it various between countries)..

    In the UK, the license you need (assuming you are the organiser – that is who is responsible, not the DJ) will depend on your broadcast method and how people access the stream. For example, if you have a stream which is completely private (IE encrypted and only some of your friends can get on it and you have to give them a password) then the license amount will be reduced as it is not a public event..

    It is the station owner not the DJ who is responsible for the license though (Unless of course that is one and the same person).

    I suspect that many of the stations will be paid for with some form of advertising – not many other options out there – but many will be run as a hobby and therefore probably don’t need to make any profit…

    The stream would be placed on a website for the whole world to hear and is managed by me and a friend in Canada.
    We are also not trying to make any profit as we are trying to just do this for the fun and the experience.

    i saw amounts up to 700 euro’s dropping on a website for licensing and for a fun time and practice i think that is a bit expensive 😉

    I would agree that that sounds a little harsh..

    As you are over in the Netherlands, hopefully mod @DJ_Vintage will chime in here as that’s his neck of the woods 🙂

    However also check out that some streaming server hosting services also have the license fee included when you rent a streaming server. So also check that out. I cannot list any, as there are literally thousands.

    Quick question for you – why not just join one of the stations already running? They will already have some listeners which will be easier for you than trying to get the word out about a totally new station.

    @todd-oddity     thing is that together with a friend from canada and 5 other dj’s we started a group for trance.
    We called it Trance-Harbour (www.trance-harbour.com) and we want to help each other as a group.
    As we are running a weekly show called Digital Ascent (where we all play our 2 hour shows on ) we thought it would be a great idea to set up a radio station of our own.
    It would be great for ourselves and we might push the whole concept to a higher level.

    So that’s in short the reason why 😉

    Btw I am already playing my 2 weekly shows on online radio stations \o/

    I shot off an email to the tech guy at the online station I play on to ask what they are using. They have a Shoutcast plan with a company called RadioSolution. One monthly fee based on the number of people you expect to tune in to your station.

    Also, if one of your partners is Canadian, they have SOCAN licences so nothing further should be required from you, although you would want to discuss that with them before signing up.

    Indeed locating your radio in Canada might be much easier.
