    Hi DJ Malsidious,

I went through a phase of trying to decide which music organisation software would be best suited for me so I played around with a few and then settled for MusicBee (Windows only currently) which is an awesome program with many features. It allows you to customize the interface to your liking and even display waveform which is handy.

The downside which I didn’t really give much thought to at first was that all the time I put into organising my tracks and playlists etc. didn’t automatically show up in Traktor (Haven’t tested with Serato). I could of played around with it more and tried to get it to work automatically but I decided to avoid all the hassle and eventually changed to iTunes.

iTunes is definitely not the best or most flexible music software out there but after organizing all my playlists/smart playlists, they instantly showed up in Traktor/Serato (Refresh may be required). I also get music from the iTunes Store so it makes further sense for me to use it.

So in the end you may not like it but it does get the job done and that’s what you want so you can focus on mixing with an organised music collection instead of wasting time trying to hack things together to make it work. I strongly suggest to setup smart playlists, they really help alot.

Hope that helps, all the best!

Yep, iTunes is the go-to software. No big fan of it myself. But hard to beat for DJs, especially since it’s supported in just about all major DJ Software and Pioneer’s RekordBox.

Also, if you have 1000s of tracks, your core collection is too big. If you are a mobile DJ like me it makes sense to split your collection into a core collection (your primary go-to stuff, the crate you can get through any night with if you didn’t have to worry about requests) and the zillion other tracks in a somewhat logical folder structure (can be as simple as by artist (first) name) in either a separate folder or on an external harddisk. You can find files there (you’ll only need to access it for requests after all) through the file browser in the DJ software. It doesn’t need to be tagged or anything. No prep work needed.

Just my two cents, as usual

    Hi DJ Vintage,

I currently have iTunes setup on my desktop and laptop (desktop: Windows 7 OS, Laptop: Windows 8 OS). I primarily use my desktop to organize my tracks and playlists however it does not automatically sync playlists. Can you suggest how I can go about making sure that all my playlists/smart playlists are synced across both systems automatically? Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Chris

Not automatically, no (home sharing is an option there, where you open an iTunes collection on another device).

You could have your actual collection on your laptop (assuming that is where your DJ software resides, so that is where you want your actual tracks to sit), then just open that collection from your desktop and do all your prep work. Then fire up the DJ software on the laptop and do the analyze stuff.

I am pretty sure it should work that way. I do use home sharing but from my Apple TV for videos, so can’t say 100% sure.

Anybody care to confirm my “suspicion”?

And be sure to backup! As Phil (Morse) is fond of saying “if it isn’t backed up, it doesn’t exist”.
