I wouldn’t bother getting an external drive for storing music on if you laptop hard drive isn’t overflowing – I keep all my music on my hard drive – which is a SATA 1 500GB disc in my now getting-on-a-bit Dell laptop – and I have no problems loading tracks in VDJ. You would find that the track loading time would be increased using an external disc – any drive not attached directly through SATA will be slower than a SATA disc..

A prime example would be that I have a version of windows 8.1 installed on an external drive (USB 3.0, 300Mb/s drive) as a backup – and that takes over twice as long to boot as windows 8.1 does from my hard drive.

When you say it stutters, do you mean that the audio output stutters when you try to load a track? If it does, try increasing the latency on your soundcard – I had that problem (I was running mine at 3ms though lol) and that fixed it.

Hi Bob thanks for the reply, I’ll take a look into the latency thanks, the stutter is minimal it doesn’t affect the sound . I think I will stick to keeping everything internal as I don’t want to affect performance of any thing .
Thanks for the quick reply & good advice 🙂

    TrevorT,
Last night one of the other DJ plugged in his external and his computer froze (windows laptop) which caused a dead silence until he rebooted. IMHO I wouldn’t go that route after seeing this and definitely keep everything on internal hard drive

It’s never a good idea to plug in disks to a running system in a live DJ environment. Plug it in before booting your computer and stay the h*ll away from the cables after that til the end of your gig.

It’s also the reason I NEVER accept to put any USB-sticks with music on them into my laptop to load other people’s tracks (apart from using uncensored stuff from other people in the first place 🙂 ). If need be I have my backup media players with USB port. Don’t care if one of those crashes and needs a reboot.

I use an external hard drive and have been for over 7 years. When you add the external drive to the Virtual DJ Database search you should be able to load tracks as quickly as an internal drive.
