If you have 4 gigs of ram, 2.6 MHz processor and 500 gigs of storage. It will do. Doesn’t really matter. USB ports should be at least 3, though you can always buy a splitter. Would recommend at least a 15′ screen.

Don’t need anything expensive or advanced. Almost any laptop will work.

I would agree with Malsidious – with a couple of other points.

In a DJ laptop, what I want is:

    – Decent processor – that means Intel i5, 3rd gen or higher, at least dual core and a processor speed somewhere above 2.0GHz.
    – 4GB Ram – the more the better. I run 8GB and have never had any issues. Bear in mind that this is sometimes not upgradable (mainly in apple hardware but watch out)
    – Decent Cooling. A DJ booth is often a very hot place and many laptops will start to slow the processor down if they get too got – not ideal during a DJ set. The measure of “Decent” will change depending on where you live (hot/cold) and where you gig.
    – High(ish) res screen. Screen resolution is more important than screen size in my opinion, although I wouldn’t go smaller than 13″ – I use 15″ at 1366×768 and which it was higher resolution sometimes – this is where Full HD or Better-than-HD displays come in handy.
-Backlit keyboard. Many higher-end laptops come with this and it is really useful in an often dark DJ booth..

That’s it. If you are a video DJ, you may want a higher-end graphics card in there as well but if not then it is unnecessary..

Alright thanks a lot guys I had no problem djing with my 3rd gen i5 quad core with 8 gb of rams running on windows 7. I was just wondering if it will affect serato performance going down from a dedicated nvidia graphics to an onboard Intel 5500.

    Thanks guys, a lot!

Won’t make any sort of difference – the video requirements for running Serato will be minimal and not much above running window itself!!

Indeed, only check always with DELL laptops how the fans are placed as DELLs tend to overheat. It should not be a problem with the XPS series as it is their more advanced series, the cheaper series (I forget the name) has bad issues.

Lol.. I can vouch for that – I use the series that Terry is talking about – the Inspiron series – and the cooling is rubbish. Thank god that I don’t DJ in hot rooms or do anything too intensive.. A better cooled laptop is on my wish list!!

I have a dedicated nvidia card in mine – which I don’t use – but I wish I could. If my laptop had the cooling to match the processing power, I could run whatever I liked on it.. 🙁

As he said though – the XPS will probably be fine.. 🙂
