Hey there! I was in a similar situation to yours. I had a controller that was terribly mapped. The sync button started the music. If I were you I would go for the S2 because you can easily add to it later on with traktors other controllers like F1 and keep expanding even to a four deck setup. S2 has a booth out too which will suit your needs. Plus having your extra two decks separate will allow you to disconnect them and focus and your main 2 during gigs and mobile events. Btw Assuming you mean 3.5mm jack on the hercules, the RCA outs are better. Hope this helps.

PS I also recommend checking out the Denon DJ gear too. They are great for mobile DJ’s.

    One more thing!

Don’t choose your software to what your buddies use. Give them all a try and see what suits you. If you don’t need very much sampler control and other options. Traktor may be more than what you need. Give Serato or Virtual DJ a try. Those are very popular among party DJ’s

Wow, can’t fault you for not giving us plenty of info! 😛

To answer the btw, I’d pick RCA outputs, but effectively they offer the same signal as the (mini)jack. So, sound-wise, there shouldn’t be too much advantage using one over the other. Clearly, the RCAs have more contact surface, so more “room” for the electrons to flow so to speak compared to the 3.5mm stereo-jack. Again, especially over small distances it won’t make much difference in the end.

Ok, you asked for our (in this case my) opinion, so I’ll be giving it to you straight, LOL.

First of all, find your own workflow and then determine what works best for you. The choice for the right software is mega important, if it doesn’t fit your workflow, you’ll end up switching and with the amount of preparation going into setting up your software and collection within that software, that is not something you want to happen if you can avoid it.
Going for software a) or b) just because your friend happens to use/like it, is at the bottom of the “reasons why” list, imho. Also, even if you DJ together, you will be DJ-ing from your own copy of Traktor with your own collection. So it’s pretty irrelevant what he uses.

You can probably get free trial/test version of software like Virtual DJ (VDJ), Serato and Mixvibes Cross. I’d say download and install those, load 20 of your favorite tracks and pretend you are doing a one-hour gig. It’s time well-spent. You’ll find that Traktor IS actually right for you, you have confirmation and the peace of mind that you choose well or you find that you need/like something else and you will be able to switch before having put in too much time in the “wrong” software. Either way you win!

As for hardware. Today, when it comes to Traktor, the only right advice to give you is to stick with NI hardware. Meaning the S2 or S4 (or any of the modular units). Obviously there’s the S8, but not in your current budget.

If you go to other software, the choice broadens a lot. Our current favorites (and have been for a while) are the Pioneer DDJ-SB, Denon MC2000, Reloop Beatmix 2 (or 4) and the Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 (or soon out 3).

My personal opinion is to forget about the Behringer, but that is just me. All the other controllers mentioned beat the Behringer hands down in many aspects.

    Again, just my two cents.

    @both 🙂

First of all, thank you for taking the time to read and to reply! (I realised I did put a lot to read in it…)

    Software:
    – I already used virtual dj before (not that much though) and for what I remember it’s not bad
    – Since I already spent some hours on Traktor I’m quit familiar with the program and I didn’t have any concerns/problems/let down’s YET.(The music I/We Dj is EDM in case you need/want to know)
    – One other thing is that we share the same music collection and we’ll be dj-ing together on one laptop and one controller so I think it’ll make it easier to stay with Traktor

Hardware: (keeping in mind the software)
    – The S2 looks like a decent device but I’m really worried with not having the 4 deck’s
(I noticed I do use a 3th deck from time to time)
    – The S4 would be the best but I think it’s quite expensive seen that I’m a novice…
    – The Pioneer DDJ-SB, Denon MC2000, Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 and Reloop Beatmix 2/4 don’t have a external supply and since I found the USB powered problem with the new MacBooks I’m concerned it will eventually have the same problem.
Also I don’t get the why they put the headphones on the side (pioneer) and I noticed they didn’t have booth out.
(DJ-mepps said it was useful) ==> again I’m not sure that it’s necessary at this stage (also keeping in mind the friend has a Numark 4-track controller).

    BTW, why not the Behringer?
(I have a midi controller that I use with Ableton (BCM-2000) that still works “fine” after all these years)

First of all, if you are gonna be using the same controller gigging together, why get a controller of your own? And if you want one to practice separately (will you sync laptops?), why not get the same one your friend has? Just some questions that come to mind.

Since we don’t advice using the other controllers with Traktor, it’s not really an issue. You CAN always buy a powered USB-hub and hook your controller up to that, eliminating the MacBook port problems.

The mentioned controllers are entry level controllers, this means lesser build quality, no booth out, less(er) features, no balanced outputs, less(er) inputs, mostly no standalone mixer capability.
They are good for the price you pay. If you want more features and quality, the price goes up.

Whether a booth output is necessary, depends mainly on the setup. If you are not directly next to the PA or if you are mixing solely in your headphones, a booth speakers is almost a must. Otherwise it will sound good with one ear in your headphone and the other to the (further away) PA speaker and when you do the actual mix, it will be off.
Personally I am not a big fan of mixing solely in my headphones, so I consider a booth speaker a must. But that’s just me.

Why Pioneer put the headphones on the side, is a design question. I know many DJs who hate connectors at the front (like headphone and mic) because they keep sticking into their stomach as they stand closer to their controllers. On lots of traditional mixers the headphone connector was on the top surface. Nowadays that often isn’t possible due to the limited height of the controller and it being filled with electronics. Either way wouldn’t bother me too much. Get a 90-degree headphone adapter and don’t worry about it.

I had too much problems with Behringer. They have a few good products that I would safely buy, the rest is too much of a risk factor for me. Again, my personal experience with Behringer for the last 15+ years. Their “better” stuff isn’t all that much cheaper than the reputable DJ brands that are better in quality and features (more features doesn’t always equal better features) and their cheaper stuff is consumer gear. Nice to give your kids for christmas but not something I’d pick up in your case.

Frankly, I think you should consider holding off on purchasing a bit longer and use your friends gear where you can and buy a used S4 as soon as the bank allows.

Again, thanks for the respons 🙂

The reason I want one of my own is just so I can practice at my house by myself. I cannot get the same due to his controller not being sold anymore.

I also recently discovered that you can map the S2 in such a way that you can switch to deck C and D.

Did you ever use the Behringer CMD 4a?

Does anyone own a Behringer CMD 4a or a Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2 MKII and would like to give some personal experience feedback?

Nice song. One of my (then) favorites.
