KeymasterAt that price I would look into the KRK range of monitors.

ParticipantWhy are the KRK monitors so grand? I have Yamaha HS8s and was wondering how they compare. Thanks in advance.

Moderator8s in my opinion are a tad big for a small to medium practice room. I have 5s now (KRK) and those are slightly lacking in the low end. My next set will be KRK6s, albeit not the Rokits anymore but the VXT-series.
If you need more oomph with the 6s, the 10″ sub is a good addition.
The Yamaha’s are fine speakers. When it comes to practicing, the quality of studio monitors is, imho, unnecessary and to reproduce the “club feel” you’d be better off with a pair of good small PA-speakers (8 or 10 inch). Monitor speakers are made to be as flat as possible and as a result are tiring to listen to long time. Also studio monitors are not really made to play at high volume levels for a long time (most engineers listen to their monitors at 80dB average!). So, unless you are a producer needing the actual studio monitor quality, other options can serve you well.
The KRKs have made some compromises as a result of the budget price which causes them to be less than flat. But that actually makes them a bit better for long term listening without the fatigue that can come from flat monitors.

InactivePioneer S-DJ50X (perfect size), or any higher (60,80)
The Pioneer speakers are so good, I enjoy the looks even more than the KRK (especially the white ones) because they have lights that light up under the tweeter which looks amazing.
This is what they look like..

InactiveHonestly I think you shouldn’t ever go higher than 80dB without protection. Ever. I damaged my ears with this and it comes with lifelong problems mate.

KeymasterActually the KRK have logo lights which look pretty badass too 😉
I am actually not that fond of the Pioneer.
While the Rockit KRKs have some sacrifice which actually is good for DJs (for production I use higher end adams, but love the KRK for DJ practice). The Pioneer make a similar sacrifice, but IMHO sacrifice too much in the mid range and leave a gap, not unlike their headphones (which I also do not like).March 19, 2015 at 10:34 am #2158911Gary Barton
ParticipantThanks for the rest to my post
Anyone use jbl control 5? Of used and upgraded
I’ve been looking at the JBL LSR308. As the 5s have been great for years

ModeratorFrankly, I have been in sound engineering a long time as well as DJ-ing. And not too many places where I find JBL monitors (of any kind). It’s either a set of Yamaha’s (for those old NX10 lovers), KRKs for low end work but mostly the higher end stuff like Focal, Adams, Genelec, etx. Out of most DJs price range (certainly outside mine).

ParticipantI had the pioneers sdj80x and thought they were fantastic, I had krk rokit 5s before that.
However they are huge, in a shop you don’t notice how big they really are.
So maybe try the 6s in either krk or pioneer, I can’t compare the pioneers to the krk as they were differnt sizes and obviously the pioneers had more bass due to size, but both sound great.
Sound quality is brilliant (I don’t produce, only dj) so was great for making mixes in ableton, traktor etc.

KeymasterYes the KRK 6s are A LOT more low end than the 5s. The difference between the 6s and 8s is not that big then (but still noticeable), so that I am sticking with 6s for DJ training.
