Tuomas Helander
ParticipantLucky guesses:
1) its Gemini. While Genimi has some interesting products recently, its still in rather small market. There are more than half a dozen other manufacturers before it, and the controllers are mostly for VDJ.
2) VDJ, as mentioned before. You cannot use it with Serato, it’s not recommended to go with Traktor. However I put it, these are the two big ones, and as far as it goes to me, I’d pick even Mixvibes before VDJ.
3) Is there something wrong with your laptop? Full MIDI mappable is not the same than natively mapped to software XXX, or plug-in-HID mode.
4) Other brands have stand alone mixers like this, too, You know, and the price of stuff like the CDJ-850+ hovers around 800 €/$ for a pair, with some nice resale value too. What would this cost, if used for a year or so?
5) Who would need this? A mobile jock needs 4 channels for all those external sources, mics, karaoke, etc. A club resident wants to use Serato, Traktor, or Cross DJ for convenience.March 17, 2015 at 10:35 am #2157271Terry_42
KeymasterI think Tuomas summed it up nicely. Where 1 and 2 are the most prominent and hardest hitting.

ParticipantIt is actually nativly supported in VDJ8. But I agree that the Serato point is valid and some people still use Traktor, even if it’s less and less supported by anyone but NI
What I don’t get is how people miss, that you can use this as a stand-alone-everything-in-a-box with a USB stick and without a laptop for a bar gig, and then maybe add a laptop for a wedding gig, where you need a bigger selection.
IMO this is what the Numark NV and the Numark NS7iii were supposed to deliver, but have chosen not to for some reason…If the Numark NV could do this I would already have bought it (the NS7iii is too clumsy IMO), but no, it still needs Virtual DJ or Serato on a laptop at all times

Participantactually waiting for this one long long looong time.
only alternative would be Stanton scs.4dj imho (price / specs).
so it took almost 5 years!!! looking fwd to reviewsMarch 17, 2015 at 9:00 pm #2157541DJ Vintage
ModeratorI fail to see the enthusiasm for this unit. So it can play music from a USB stick. No FX, no beatgridding, no cue points, no track management, no playlists, nothing. It is about as useful as two media players and a 4-channel mixer, but at the very low end of the budget spectrum.
It is, imho, in no way the way a laptop-less unit should be.
The laptop isn’t just there for the bigger screen, keyboard and hard drive, but it’s there to run DJ software which turns a controller like this from a “dumb” mp3 playing player/mixer into this amazing, modern-day power tool for DJs, jam-packed with features. In a sense you could say that a controller is there to give you easier access to the features in the DJ software, not the other way around.
Again, just my two cents.

ParticipantGemini just doesn’t have the biggest fan base. While I do like the products (my G2V is still going strong!) without a strong fan base, there’s not a lot of people talking about it. Without a lot of people talking about it there’s no support/modding community. Without that there’s no hype. Especially without having the serato stamp it’s just not as popular.

KeymasterVintage summed it up nicely. It is lacking for a standalone unit and it is lacking as a controller unit.
Also not only does Gemini not have a wide fanbase it also has a very small quality control base and customer support base…March 18, 2015 at 7:22 pm #2158391Ran F
ParticipantNice discussions, good opinions
you’re right:might be more something for low-budget enthusiastic hobyist (which I am). last two laptops werd not good up tot the job, hence checking standalone/midi options (affordable)…anyone idea how this is compared tot Stanton Scs.4dj ?
any of these 2 will be my next purchaseMarch 19, 2015 at 9:15 am #2158861Terry_42
KeymasterBoth are quality wise equally bad. So if you are in luck both will work, if not both will not work as desired. Flip a coin…

ParticipantI recently purchased this unit, for two reason; 1, it’s pretty affordable and 2, you don’t need a lap top to use it.
I’m happy with the unit, and it’s just the right size, the right weight, pretty sturdy and unless you’re going to be using this controller as a slamming board, it is well built and can withstand a pretty good amount of abuse.
It’s internal sound card gives a good and loud punch when using it in MIDI mode, although there is a slight delay from the moment you press play to the moment the song starts, nothing big if you set your cue a few milliseconds ahead. Other than that, it works flawless with VD8 and there is no SYNC button on the unit, for those of you who hate the sync option. I wish this unit could also be used with Serato DJ but I love Virtual Dj, so I have no problem, but it would be nice.
The wave bar is not the fanciest of them all, quite simple but effective and running the unit straight from your USB thumb drive is just beautiful.
The only thing that I don’t like is the cue volume. When in MIDI mode, the cue volume is loud and clear, when running the unit from the USB< the cue sound tend to decrease dramatically, making it a bit hard to hear when performing live and having a monitor next to you.
Overall, it is a nice unit, one that I would recommend to any DJ, whether your a newbie or an experienced DJ. It’s not to expensive, it’s well built, it packs a punch, and being able to run it in stand alone mode, it’s awesome.
Like every other controller out there, this one has the potential to be a top seller for Gemini. However, based on my observations, many DJ’s prefer to have a lap top y their side when using a controller. After all, the controllers were created to control the software via a laptop.
Lastly, I always like to go with the underdogs, because you never know what they have to offer until you test out their products. I’ve been using the Gemini CDJ700’s for three years, and I love them. They recently released the MDJ1000’s and I cant wait to get a pair of these units and take them for a spin.

ParticipantI have just bought the Gemini GSX media controller off a third party source. I set it up with vitural DJ 8 and when I’m 10mins in it cuts off and is saying I need a subscription to use it more. I didn’t get any disk with it or product key just the manual can anyone on this help me out thanks. I’m a home user and it sounds like to much money paying for a subscription service.

ModeratorI believe (but VDJ is the software I know the least about, so don’t shoot me) that there is a free version of VDJ, obviously with limitations, there is a one-time purchase, life-time free upgrades option and there is now a subscription model.
Theoretically that should get you the option of your choice. All you need to do is download and install the correct version (and pay if you picked a paid version).

KeymasterVDJ 8 will cut you off if you have no license for it. The GMX does not come with a license for VDJ 8 Pro, you need to either buy it or subscribe.
