    Looking at the crowd “visuall” is a good place to start. Knowing in advance what venue you are in, if the place is “themed” or genre-specific (this can be different for different days of the week btw) is important. Same for mobile DJs. Is it a b’day with people that see each other on a regular basis or a wedding with people that only see each other at weddings (and thus have a lot of catching up to do) or a company event with people that see each other all day all week long.

    Girls are priority number one. No girls dancing = nobody dancing. So aim for the girls already hip-moving on the side, try to get them going. Take it from there.

    Just remembered the floor clearing doesnt mean it always you playin the wrong tunes, folks need to rest up after all that jump and down, buy some refreshment (big plus point for you with the owner), and dont just keep your eyes on the dance floor only, look around the corner, the tables, the sofas, the very very dark dark corner, what are they doing there ?

    If both the dance floor and other corners of the club is empty as well, its not your fault then , the clubs prolly have some trouble to bring some heads in

    yea i enjoy when you get the right flow going but then slow it down ,everyones smiling while the leave the floor. You know they’re heading off for a drink probably a quick recap of what they heard but then they’re coming right back

    As long as they keep those heads bobbing and feet tapping while they are having drinks and talking, it’s all goooood.

    Ahhhh.. thanks guys. so clearing the floor is a good thing since obviously you want to sell alcohol to people as well as give them a chance to rest. Got it. So I guess a better, (much albeit more advanced question), is when do you know to give people a break assuming you have been rocking the party?

    @DJ
    vintage – good tip man.. thanks.. they can leave the floor, but you still gotta control them when they’re relaxing haha.. DJs ARE PUPPETEERS! haha (hey! did I say you could sit? get up and dance!)

    I tend to treat energy levels in my set like breathing… relatively short cycles between relaxed and energetic, probably about 20-30 minutes for the cycle. At the same time, I may ratchet the energy so that it’s still going up, but that depends on where I’m sitting timewise.
