    Hi,

I am a firm believer in all sorts of backup, especially for one-off events like weddings and such. With active speakers I either rely on only one breaking down max. I don’t like big monitors (although lots of folks use one like that – I have been in booths with TWO 15s next to my head), so I have a small Numark 100W RMS 2x 5″ monitor next to me, which is not really a match for my Mackie PA speakers, should one fail. At a small venue I think I will manage fine with one if need be (switch to mono if your software/controller/mixer has that option). For bigger events or places I want to be safe, I will bring my SRM450s (second PA set) and set up four speakers on the corners of the “dancefloor”. In this case I can run the speakers a tad lighter, have a better spread of sound/volume over the dance area and contain the loudness a little bit within that area too. The bonus obviously being I have 3 speakers left if one stops.

Thanks DJ Vintage. It’s a pretty small do – about 80 people so could probably get away with it. Some kind of backup sounds like the best bet though.

I run QSC tops but always bring a back up, cheaper monitor (15″ 2-way) for a gig like a wedding – just in case! You will only miss it if you need it and you don’t have a backup!
