ParticipantBeatunes does a handful of things, so the question is perhaps a little bit broad… that said, I personally didn’t find the application very appealing – a lot of the cooler features, like identifying sections of the song, seemed to be rather flaky (which is no great surprise, it’s very difficult to do that sort of thing).
What is it that you want to use Beatunes for? Maybe that would help to give you a more focused response to your question.

ParticipantYeah I left the question broad intentionally because I didn’t want people to feel obligated to write up a whole review on it. To be a little more specific, is it helpful for organizing your library? Also does it really help putting your set together? Besides Key are the other metadata Categories useful or is it pointless to break your tracks down that far and how accurate is it?
Thanks,

ParticipantI didn’t personally find it very useful for organizing my library, but your mileage may vary. For managing the metadata, I just use mp3tag, and I organize my files by hand other than that for the most part.

ParticipantYeah some of that stuff seemed pretty gimmicky to me. Like color and mood. If you have the key that the track is in what’s the point? Unless it really works good and truly does help you make a better set. And I’m not seeing the true potential. Seems like they found a solution for a problem that never existed. Or am I looking at it all wrong?

ParticipantI think that their ideas are good, but that what they are trying to do is very difficult, and impossible to have complete accuracy.

ParticipantMp3Gain, mp3tag and KeyFinder. All free. You won’t need anything else. Thank me later :p

ModeratorMP3Gain … is a good free tool. Personally I prefer Platinum Notes because it does several other things as well and all in one go. But that is paid software (worth every penny imho, but that is a personal choice).
MP3Tag … also a good free tool. I use Tag&Rename on my windows desktop, personal preference and I was using that before I tried out MP3Tag and the advantages to switch weren’t really there for me. I mostly use MetaBliss from the guys from Mixed in Key now (again, not free, but runs nicely on my Mac and does what I need it to do for the small amounts of tracks I add to my collection at a time).
KeyFinder … defo the best FREE software around, but … and a big but in my book … according to our friends over at DJ Tech Tools (2014 key software comparison), KeyFinder gets it right about 3 out of 4 times. That means it gets it wrong 1 out of 4 times, in other words 25% of the time the key will not be accurate! That is a margin that I think is way too big. Mixed in Key is up in the high 90%s, meaning that only 3 or so tracks in 100 are not accurate. That is a margin I can live with.

ParticipantSome day, I will get around to improving the detection code in KeyFinder… open source is a good thing.

ParticipantBought both, mixed in key and Beatunes… It doesn’t work out for me. I’m back with the good old hand picking and rely on my ears!

ParticipantThought I’d bump this thread as I am in process of setting up my first playlist for a potential gig and tried downloading the Beatunes trial to give it a go. Bar manager wanted a loungey vibe so I purchased about 10 new tracks as a start that I felt had a good chill loungey vibe and figured I’d stick em into Beatunes to see what it said.
I chose the song that I liked the most as my seed and what’s funny is that all the results Beatunes gave me for a potential playlist were hip hop songs, haha. So it went from this jazzy, piano vibe with a beat to Big Pun, 50 cent and 2pac. But I guess what’s good about it is it’s just another tool, as Phil said, to learn more about your library which opened my eyes to how much hip hop I have in my library in comparison to loungey jazz music.
It also had these transition icons that seemed helpful like “incompatible key change” and “change of decade” but not sure how practical I would need this on a regular basis.
It also has the key detection but have no idea how it compares to Mixed In Key or Keyfinder.
And while I like the color labels, seems redundant if a good dj is supposed to know his tunes inside and out along with sticking cue points in the different sections, right?

KeymasterIf you want real cool laid back songs, check out the Cafe del Mar samplers and Berlin Deep House compilations and be done with it. You cannot go wrong with them.
