ModeratorHi Jao, nice first step!
First I would try not to overthink things, this is a real danger. Flow is more important than brains in this case 😀
If you do have only a short 15-30 minute set, there is not too much sense in playing it by ear. No real need building it up slowly, your set would be over by the time you can push it up. Also no real reason for a long cooldown, although I personally would make sure everybody knows my set it over. Maybe ending with a track that has like a final big bang ending?
What you could do is imagine a super 1 hour set, take those tracks (including the build-up and cooldown) and try to mix them in such a way that you are using about half the track, in effect speeding up your set and fitting a 1-hour set into 30 minutes. You’ll be busy, but you will take your audience on a fast forward journey through the music.
Just a thought.

ParticipantHi Joao! Gongratz to the gig!
I’m in the same situation as you
I’ll be playing 15-30min x 5-6 times between the concerts
But I’m planning on playing simular genres as the previous and transition more towards the next artist but alittle still not the same genre
For example if someone is playing soul and the next rock I’ll might play soulful house or something like dat and transition to some laidback chill rockJust an idea thou
Good luck man!February 5, 2015 at 4:01 pm #2136241Joao Pinto
ParticipantThank you for the replies so far. Like Dj Vintage said, that was the kind of set I was thinking of. Playing as most tracks as possible, the way that people would want to hear how I would sound If I played a complete set (I hope I made myself clear with this one).
To UCF, that would be a good idea but the musical styles inbetween are too different from what Im supposed to play, I mean, I was invited to play house music for the younger attendees but either way theres ir not an electronic style that comes close to the bands there. You gave the example of soul and rock, but thats not the kind of genres of the rest of the artists, as I said on my first post, it´s popular music from my country so I guess I´ll have show what I´m all about and what I want to be known for…
I´ll make a mini mix with my ideas and post it on this forum so you guys can listen and give me ideas. A link will also be posted on this thread.

ParticipantSounds like fun! You going to play any Buraka Som Sistema?
I’d imagine Portugese kuduro would go over well. Hangover is one of my favorites.March 3, 2015 at 11:52 pm #2150781Joao Pinto
ParticipantHi guys, Im back sorry for the delay but I´ve had a lot of work and zero time for mixing but here you go, this is what I had in mind.

ParticipantHard to judge for people like myself who aren’t in Portugal but the key is to maintain momentum – not necessarily do anything TO it (if that makes sense?) unless you’re billed as a main performer. Just play popular stuff that you know that the crowd will know & love 🙂

ParticipantOverall, sounded good to me. I wanted to make a comment on your first transition but for some reason it says “due to licensing restrictions, it’s not possible to seek backwards” Basically, I’m no expert but I felt it was a little abrupt, not too much, but maybe let it build up a bit more? But I could imagine chilling in a big stadium listening to this while drinking a beer. Good job man! Good luck

Participant@joao-pinto I have not heard their latest album. What’s it called? I’ll try to give your mix a listen after work today
