ModeratorWell, the S1 is an “old” unit obviously, no longer in production as far as I know. That need not be a problem and if the price is really good. Obviously some of the more up to date features in Serato (like Flip for example) won’t be taking into account with the design/layout of the S1 as it simply wasn’t around. I don’t know how well Pioneer/Serato do support (firmware/drivers) for end-of-life gear.
Clearly you’ll be losing the performance pads, but that would be true for the MC6000mk2 as well (although there is at least a way to trigger samples on the latter), but that can be solved by getting a NEON or something similar.
Especially in light of your question about Serato remixing, I think performance pads in combination with Flip features are a great way to start. My personal recommendation would be either the Pioneed DDJ-SX2 or the Denon MC6000mk2. Both are great controllers supporting Serato’s newest features and including full Serato versions. If portability and/or mic use is an issue, the MC6000mk2 takes the cake. It’s also by far the most sturdy unit controller land. Having owned and used the mk1 for years, I can safely day it’s a veritable, indestructible tank. It’s compact for travel, but not a lightweight.
Also, but this is important for me and many other mobile DJs (not sure if it is for you though), the MC6000mk2 features matrix inputs. There is a LOT of gear you can hook up and you can usually assign any input to at least two channels, giving incredible flexibility. Again, it’s a big plus for me, but might not be for you.January 16, 2015 at 10:07 am #2123011Terry_42
KeymasterI consider the S1 pretty outdated and do not really see any killer features over the MC2000.
Apart from the controllers that Vintage already listed, I would also take a look at the reloop Terminal Mix 8.

ParticipantAnother vote for the MC6000. I have both the SX and the first generation of the MC6000. The SX is huge, and a good controller, but I love the size and functionality of the MC6000.

ModeratorAnd the mk2 is decidedly better. Better sound card, smarter layout, full Serato support, still the same compact (19″) size.

ParticipantThanks guys as always fantastic advise hadn’t thought of the Terminal Mix 8 have to have a look at it .. yeah won’t go for the Pioneer sx great unit and most DJs here in Australia use Pioneer I find . The price of the SX is around $1200 and the Terminal Mix 8 and 6000 Mk 2 are around $600-700..
Just got to work out which of those two are better for me ..January 17, 2015 at 10:39 am #2123521DJ Vintage
ModeratorI have no meaning either way …. (whispers: go for the MC6000! LOL)

ParticipantThanks yeah Terminal Mix 8 vs 6000 Mk hard decision I like the 6000 mk 2 because of small size and works much like my MC2000 but the performance pads on the Terminal Mix 8 look good .

ModeratorIf you only use the performance pads only for sample triggering, then you can use the buttons assigned to that purposes on the MC6000 as well. But only if it’s occassionally would I suggest that, they are not performance pads after all.
If you use performance pads all the time and for various modes (sample, flip, etx.), you can opt for the Terminal Mix (although I think you might feel the lack of seperate mic channels and the plethora of inputs and matrix switching) or you can get the Reloop NEON, which is mapped for Serato use and just set that on a small stand above or next to your controller.
