There is no real rule. Each company has some cycles and some do not give discounts at all.
For example Pioneer only gives discounts when a new model arrives and that can be anytime.
Native Instruments usually has a discount around mid-summer and one in winter holidays.
Some have special offers directly at NAMM or Muskmesse Frankfurt.
I rarely see any discounts on higher end Numark gear.

So generally the rule is: Buy when you need.

Yeah. Most online stores have low prices all year round. Here in my part of the world (north-west Europe) Thomann – originally from Germany – and BAX-Shop – from Holland – will have the lowest prices at any given time.

Obviously the launch of new gear will prompt some discount on stock of previous models. Where you always have to ask yourself if you rather have the discount or the new features (in case of the MC6000 and mk2 for example, I’d always go for the mk2 rather than a discounted mk1).

Good luck with your buying process.

I’ve been pickup up used gear and jury rigging it. It’ll do since I don’t plan to DJ professionally and I like messing around with equipment but it really is a lot of hassle. I just got an old ADJ halogen Vertigo for $30. It fills out my lighting and was worth the price but the downsides are the 15 min duty cycle, it is limited to multi-color lighting rather than single color or color fades, and no strobing.

I think you’re better off thinking about what features you want and buy based on that. If you can get a deal on it, that’s great but cost should influence how much you buy, not what you buy.
